Interview with Steven E. Sund

What's the story behind your latest book?
I have had the story running around in my head for almost 30 years. It came to me when I first started working at a research laboratory for a major corporation. When I retired I finally had time to put it to paper.

The novel is a techno-thriller with all the required parts; a young and beautiful friend (Liz), a PhD ex-boss that has just the right information (encryption) need for the quest and various other characters that help along the way. In addition, there is a love story and an explanation of why we (the human race) is here on Earth
How long did it take to write your book?
Almost 30 years. I have had this story in my head since I started working at a research laboratory at a major corporation and after I retired I finally put it to paper
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Having survived three types of cancer I know how precious life is. Every day I get out of bed I am just happy that I am "on the right side of the dirt."
What motivated you to become an indie author?
A friend published a few Science Fiction books independently and I wanted to get the Sci-Fi story in my head published. It was also on my bucket list to write and publish a Sci-Fi novel.
What do you read for pleasure?
First let me first say I try to read something entertaining and something I can learn from alternatively. But mostly I read Science and Science Fiction and that is part of the reason I wrote my book. I think that all Science Fiction stretches current science fact and when reading a Sci-Fi story, I would always get to the point in a story where I would think, “That’s not possible with.” I wanted to write a Science Fiction story that would build on what is possible with today's science.

Also, I believe every sentient being at some time or another has questioned why we are here. I wrote my Science Fiction novel to, I hope, give some insight as to what combination of events has to transpire to answer that question.
What is your writing process?
My writing process? I would say I explore and create the story in my head over a period of time until I feel it is time to write it down.
Although writing can at time be a painful process, some of the coolest things about writing a story are.
1) The control over an alternative life with characters you can manipulate.
2) The power to change the past in the story at any time to have something happen later in the story. Essentially the power to change the past and create the future.
3) The power to be anybody you want by creating a character to meet your needs.
and 4) Creating experiences in the story that you would have liked to have happen in your life.
When did you first start writing?
I always had a hard time writing in high school and college but working for a large technical corporation forced me to write reports that were concise and readable.
I have had a Sci-Fi story running around in my head for almost 30 years based on some of the things I have experienced in that corporation.
After I retired I had a chance to put the story to paper.
I enjoy techno-thrillers with just the right bit of sex and action. I hope this is what I created in my novel.

How do you approach cover design?
I had an idea about what I wanted for my cover and was lucky enough to have a nephew who is a graphic artist.
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I was a Mathematics teacher for five years during which I was lucky enough to meet my wife. I soon found that I wanted to do something more technical so I went back to school to get a Bachelor and Masters degrees in Chemical Engineering. I then spent the next thirty years as a research engineer at a multinational corporation working on projects in chemicals, material science and aerospace. I am listed as an inventor on five US patents, and on numerous published papers. I am now retired, and reside in North Carolina with my wife Janice. I have two daughters who reside in Maryland and North Carolina along with four grandchildren.
