Interview with Seldean Smith

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Pretoria, South Africa and believe that the diversity of people I was exposed to (and still get exposed to today) gave me a wide understanding of people in general.
When did you first start writing?
My love for writing started in my teen years, but it wasn't until I became a mom, in 2013, that I actually started pouring my heart and soul into writing,
What's the story behind your latest book?
Offbeat Mom's Guide To Graceful Aging is all about how to tackle aging in a more holistic way. It focusses on the mind-body connection and how you can extend your life and lead the happiest and healthiest life possible
What motivated you to become an indie author?
There are so many authors out there who just write for regular people. I feel like a lot of people don't see the need for reading when they aren't being personally addressed, talked to in their "language", which is why I chose to take (and will stay on) the alternative path.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It's an amazing platform that really gets you noticed
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
There's a lot of freedom in writing, and it's also a way of reconnecting with myself and reassessing where I'm at in my life and where it is I want to get to in the end
What are you working on next?
A couple of great titles for the Offbeat Mom's Guide To series
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My toddler, firstly and then the simple things like the opportunity for a fresh start, the excitement of making today turn into anything I want it to be
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Mostly spending time with my toddler, reading and outdoor adventure
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Ha! Yes, it was a book titled "How to Make Your Own Cleaning Products"
What is your writing process?
I start with the big concept, defrag it into 10 or so subsections that readers would want to know about and then just go with those main themes
How do you approach cover design?
With utmost attention and detail.
People definitely judge a book by it's cover
What are your five favorite books, and why?
All and any books by Deepak Chopra, the guy is a genius and just knows how to relate to people
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kobo
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
