Interview with Seymond Perry

What's the story behind your latest book?
Since the beginning of time, God has continually - and in various ways - shown His love for all of creation. The real question is this: Do WE really love HIM? His Word says, "...if we love the Lord, we will keep His commandments". Still, we find ourselves breaking His commandments daily. "Do You Love Me? God's Question to Mankind" explores those issues and how to overcome the sin that so easily ensnares us.
What motivated you to become a published author?
The Holy Spirit of God is my inspiration for all that I am. I desire to distribute God's Word throughout the world. The best way to do that is by becoming a published author! Long after this life of mine has ended, the words I have written shall continue to speak.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing comes from people telling me that my literary art has helped them or touched their lives. Those moments bring so much joy to my heart. It is in THAT moment I know everything I experienced, sacrificed, and learned was worth it - for at least one soul to take a step closer to Jesus Christ.
What do the followers of your literary art mean to you?
Those who follow me mean a great deal to me. No one can accomplish anything great by themselves. We need a support group - a TEAM. Without followers, "Do You Love Me?" would not have seen the success and great reviews it has received.
Who are some of your favorite authors?
Myles Munroe, James Baldwin, and the Apostle Paul.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My loving wife and dear children inspire me every day to get up and try again. Knowing that someone is depending on me burns a fire within that cannot be quenched.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your "free" time?
I enjoy reading the Holy Bible, going to church, exercising, reading, and spending quality time with family and friends.
What is your writing process?
Usually, a thought, idea, or topic will come to mind. I will begin to research from there. More often than not, I write from my life's experiences - which also adds great depth and realness to my works.
Describe your desk or preferred writing atmosphere.
The dining room table is where I do most of my writing. I need absolute peace and quite while I write. At most, I will have Zen Meditation music playing in the background, which is why I usually write when everyone leaves the house (or write in the middle of the night). My laptop, phone, and tablet are on the table as well. I MUST have the Strong's Bible Concordance along with a good Bible Dictionary. I usually have two different Bibles. Needless to say, when I write, it is very crowded.
How would you describe your individual writing style?
My personal writing style is that of transparency. If I must talk about my issues, failures, and shortcomings so another can be helped, so be it. The Lord promised all things (even failure, mistakes, heartache, and pain) would work for my good. If me talking about my issues and successes brings someone closer to the Lord, to GOD be the glory!
Do you remember the first story you ever read? If so, what impact did it have on who you are today as an author?
The first story I REMEMBER reading was "Fire Next Time" by James Baldwin. It was so real, so open, and so raw. It captivated me. His writing inspired and showed me how to be that kind of author.
When did you first start writing?
I've been writing since I was a little boy. I've written short stories and poems. I remember writing stories and little notes for my mother.
How did where you grew up influence your writing?
Where I grew up and currently live can be a very rough and difficult place. From high unemployment to crime, from drug infestation to racism, the city can easily destroy the strongest of people. It was through my determination to overcome, to beat the odds, and to NOT be another statistic - those things both shape and influence my writing.
Do you prefer eBooks or print? Why?
I prefer printed books. I prefer having something in my hands, the turning of pages, the distinct smell books have, etc.
What are you working on next?
Currently, I am working on a manuscript on how to raise Godly men. The state of our world is so sad and depressing. The burden has always been and shall forever be on the shoulders of men. It is up to us to raise up the next generation of Godly men.
