Interview with Shannon Bolithoe

How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I look for books in my favourite genres. I also like to listen to talking books, so that is a big selling point with me.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I remember writing was published in my school's magazine. It was about a girl who was trapped in a cathedral as a result of n earthquake. I've always liked disaster and dystopian stories, even then.
What is your writing process?
I usually wait for an inspiration and start writing based on the image it creates in my mind. I write on the train as I go to work. I am always amazed at how quickly the time goes by when I'm writing.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Jane Eyre. It started my love affair with reading. I was at a christening for one of my cousins. I was bored and found a readers digest condensed version of it. I had seen the old movie it's Orson Welles, and I was familiar with the story. I sat down on my aunty's bed and read and read until it was time to go home. My Aunty let me borrow the book. I've never looked up from books since then, even when my father told me it would ruin my eyes.
How do you approach cover design?
I look for a design that speaks to me I n relation to the story.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, Wuthering Heights, anything by Georgette Heyer, especially Regency Buck, anything by Bernard Cornwell.
What do you read for pleasure?
Murder mysteries, history books or anything else that catches my eye at the library I work at.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
iPad or iPhone.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The story in my latest book came to me in a dream. I woke up with a specific scene in my mind. It was so striking and real and full on emotion. I built the rest of the story around that one scene.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Losing myself in the story and characters. Creating a world of my own.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The alarm.
