Interview with Shaunna Gonzales

What is your writing process?
I'm what the industry calls a pantser. I must admit that I have a few story goals that are set in stone when I begin to write a book, but other than that, I'm a panster.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Oh yeah, it was Little Britches. I loved that book and had to go out and get it for myself, but prior to that, my mother had a collection of classics and the only one I remember reading was Beauty and the Beast. Why do I mention these two? Because I usually have at least one horse in my books and because well the Beast got the Beauty.
How do you approach cover design?
Well, I have some inkling in mind but I don't usually go with my first impression Like with Halfback Hero, oh I had a gorgeous bare chest with x's and o's on it but decided against it because of that bare chest and what readers usually expect when they see bare skin..
What do you read for pleasure?
I usually don't read for pleasure, sounds bad but I don't. Instead I read books in my genre. Right now I'm looking for some goood time travel reads
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I used to have a kindle but I burned it out with how much reading I was doing. Now, I read on my computer. I know it sounds lame, but it is true. That and I like the old-fashioned ink on paper.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Well, none of them but I am trying a new thing that you may be interested in. I'm trying to promote a freebie on Amazon, the first of my time travel series so if it isn't free yet, please pester amazon for it. It is called The Talisman Crisscross.
Describe your desk
I have an old roll top desk that my son gave to me. Although I don't ever close it. I've got too much stuff scattered all over it!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I spent my first thirteen years on a ranch out in Southeastern Idaho. I remember laying on the haystack looking at the old red barn. I remember how Dad said they had moved it from Champagne and that it used to be a brothel. That got my juices flowing. I would lay there and daydream over what the brothel used to be like. Well, you can see what it morphed into with reading my first time travel novel for free, The Talisman Crisscross.
When did you first start writing?
I wrote my first short in junior high. but i misplaced it so it'll never be found. then again as a junior in high school. Then I mentioned it to my big sister back in the mid-seventies. She steered me clear of writing, but I started in earnest about 2005 when my youngest went to school.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I assume you mean Halfback Hero. Well it started out as the last of Trevor's story. Live, Love, Repeat. A story my sister couldn't let me forget. I just remember his being caught in a mining accident. Anyway, I cut it away from Trevor and changed the names and some of the story to fit what it is now.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Oh, well, Marsha Ward. She's been an indie author for years now and I guess that after being turned down with my big project so many times I just got the bug to do it. Now I don't know how I would ever go back to traditional publishing.
