My desk is full of clutter and cataclysm... on a bad day, at least. I do love the idea of chaos when it comes to my desk though. Reflects my mind perfectly.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, where the big city stretches, but opportunity comes at its limits. I wanted to escape, and eventually, I did. I always had a knack for creation, and in my school, we were more academic above creative. I guess I was meant to be the black sheep of the honor students.
When did you first start writing?
I was writing stories from a young age, but I didn't consider becoming a novelist until I was fourteen years old and took a look over my old works again. From there, the need to write became an obsession.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I'll give you the synopsis of my upcoming work, as it ties back to the novella "First Words: Final Lesson."
Apprentice Arcana Leilana Erovina has the chance to rise to power when she is granted a final test to gain the title of Warlord that she has craved for the last five years. She is assigned to travel about the land of Adrylis and learn one spell from every magical being.
However, there's a catch--she is not to learn from the ancestors of wizardry before her. Instead, she is assigned to learn something more from the souls that she encounters in the world of Adrylis: humbleness, passion, understanding, laughter, friendship and love.
Adrylis is in crisis, war at the doorstep of the kingdom of Linmus. Prince Remiel Vesarus is forced into hiding, racked with vengeance towards the terrorists that have destroyed all that he has ever known. With his loyal attendant Solus Brenner at his side, together they seek to restore their kingdom to its former glory and end the conflict of previous generations.
When fate pulls them down similar paths, they will discover that the magic budding in their crumbling world certainly comes with a price.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I started as an Indie author on a whim, actually. I liked the idea of self-publishing and getting to retain all of your rights and most of your money.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I'll find out!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Creating memorable characters. I hope that they inspire other people.
What do your fans mean to you?
The world. Cliche, I know, but I wouldn't be anywhere without them.
What are you working on next?
"The Final Lesson" is next up! After that, I've got some work to do on the second book in "The One Left Behind" series, and some other novellas along the way!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The desire to create something magical. Literally, you know, because fantasy.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Playing video games, being trapped at my night job, or sleeping. Probably 33% of all three in the same day.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I follow and have befriended a lot of authors since starting my career, and I find that some of the most impressive books come from other indies like myself!
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I'm wildly inspired by anime and video games, and it continues to show in my work. But my first story since deciding to become a writer was a very typical fantasy story about a girl named Mitsuki with amnesia that ends up discovering that she's a long-lost guardian, being guided by another by the name of Ichiro Koyama.
Part of this later came into play through "The One Left Behind."
