Interview with Sheldon Rogers

What is your writing process?
I write in pencil into a A5 ring bound pad you can find in most stationery shops. I use a standard HB pencil, a good pencil sharpener and rubber. I often have a sharpened pencil ready when the other gets blunt. I find you can take this anywhere with you.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Yes it was a full hardback version of Robinson Crusoe, I got from a friend as a birthday present at about the age of 7. My mother thought it was an odd present to buy, though the parents said, who were both teachers, that I was clever and showed an interest in all things.
How do you approach cover design?
I think about the message the book is trying to convey, and work from there.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Depends what type of book I'm reading. I like science fiction, so my favorite science fiction book is The Witches of Karres by James H Schmiz. I like history, my favorite history book is A General History of the Pirates. I Like Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe. I also like spiritual works, so The Only planet of Choice, would be my favorite there. Academic studies are up there to so Monmouth's Rebels by Peter Earle is very interesting as it take place in the area of England I live in.
What do you read for pleasure?
Science Fiction, mainly Assimov and K Dick at the moment.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I like my partners Kobo mini, as it fits in your hand and pocket easily.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Putting a chapter onto youtube.
Describe your desk
Tidy with neat piles.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing poetry at around the age of 15.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It is a combination of theology, science fiction, computer games and historical research.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The freedom to do things as and when I wanted to and to have control over what I put in my work, which mainstream publishers would not go for. Also it means I can experiment with other artists, such as my collaboration with Trademark music with a supporting soundtrack CD.

Captain Avery needs to get out of piracy. There have been too many close calls and time spent in jail (which was for gambling and not piracy). Nevertheless, he has to make it good. A change of career is required, a bounty hunter would seem more reputable. This was his chosen career path, until a chance meeting with an old friend, Captain Phillips in the notorious bar Bariki, in Diso City.
