Interview with Shellie Palmer

What is the writing process like for you?
I see it visually at the beginning of the writing process with just a journal book or spiral note pad and draw out the entire layout of the book from cover to cover with a snippet from the book, a dedication if one is required, what the content and chapters look like. I see the whole process right in front me. I'm an emotional writer and convey all my words with a deep passion as to what my thoughts are when I'm feeling emotional at that given moment. It's a therapeutic release for me when it comes to writing.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Yes, it was To Kill A Mocking Bird. I remember it fondly. It was an English reading requirement in high school, and after reading the book I felt a sense of hardship in the family unit and simply how people treat others. That kind of impact was a reminder that all families suffer and triumph in life. Support is important in a family even if you may not receive it. It's harsh reality.
How do you approach cover design?
I enjoy the cover design process as I actually create them myself from front cover to back cover.
Poster My Wall is a free online web design service I use to generate social media images, designs and covers.
The entire creative process is fun for me and helps release stress.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
To narrow it down my top 5 favorite books are; Richard Paul Evans - A Christmas Box Miracle, Richard Paul Evans - Finding Noel, Nicholas Sparks - The Last Song, Nicholas Sparks - The Lucky One and Dolly Parton - Dream More.
These books convey such heart, life experience, family, hope and inspiration. The authenticity told in these stories is real and raw, and I draw from it cause life is tough but there's also joy in it.
What do you read for pleasure?
I enjoy reading women's magazines, country music news and media releases on songwriters and musicians. They are the bread and butter of words and music combined.
Describe your desk
My desk is a complete mess full of spiral notebooks, not pads, writing paper, journal books, and previous manuscripts for using snippets, excerpts and quotes for social media promotion.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I'm just a small town girl from Stark County Ohio who's lived in the same house for half of my life. Entertainment, music and songwriters have been highly influential in my life. Best selling authors Richard Paul Evans and Nicholas Sparks are my writing influences. To me their just every day people living out their dreams.
When did you first start writing?
I actually began writing at the age of 15. I had a diary that I kept and wrote it when inspiration struck a cord or on days I just didn't know how to express my feelings. I internalize my emotions that's where my writing comes from.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The book i'm currently writing is actually a love story and is based on my life over the past year. A long distance relationship is difficult to maintain. We continue to work on it. I went through a great deal of loss in losing myself and from it the man brought into my life saved it.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I wanted to do it my way to be the real me, no fluff and no outside influence to hold me back with my writing. What I write is raw emotion and the journey of my life from growing up transitioning from teenager to adult. There are so many adversities in the world and just want to give others hope. I wouldn't want it any other way.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I'm new to Smashwords, so I'm looking forward to the next chapter of my writing career with you and where as it will take me.
