Interview with Shirley E. Watson

What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a Nook
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has been great. Anything that has happened for me has been through Smashwords and I have learned a lot also.
What do you read for pleasure?
I've read all of Agatha Christie and wish there were more! Love cozy mysteries - the British ones remind me of home, but the American ones are great, too. The historical cozies are a favorite. So many great writers today, and especially women writers..
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Still working on that one! I need reviews!
When did you first start writing?
The first thing I remember writing was a poem about little men dancing on my bed. At that time I was seven years old and very bored with a long illness that required bed rest. My poor mother had to entertain me and did a lot of reading. I must have decided to write something of my own.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Belfast, Northern Ireland, mostly during WWII. I don't know how this influences my writing but I'm sure it does. The last time I returned (the only time) was so long ago that I'm sure everything is very different there now. My memories include the blackout curtains, air raids, strict food rationing, and the sight of squadrons of planes passing overhead. Not what the average American would envision of Ireland, and yet, Ireland it was.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I liked the freedom to control what I would put out there and hopefully people will like it.
