Interview with Silkie Arshad

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I ever wrote was a short work of sci-fi/romance called digital display. Now that I think about it, it could make an interesting erotica re-write.
What is your writing process?
Though I aspire to be a planner, I generally do better with an organic process. I like to write character driven stories, so my first step is to come up with a couple of main characters and a few interesting supporting cast members. Secondly, I come up with an environment and setting, create town names and a rough map if it is a unique location for easy reference. After that, it pretty much comes down to throwing situations at my characters and seeing how they react and interact with one another. They tend to write the story themselves more than I direct them.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I do! The first real story I ever read was The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allen Poe. I remember holding my breath while reading it, feeling the suspense build as the story progressed. I was completely enthralled once I figured out where the plot was going and I literally could not put the story down. I very much admired the clarity he wrote with, but the strong dark undertones of his subjects.
How do you approach cover design?
I enjoy the process of cover design. I usually render the basic scene for the cover with 3D modeling software. I then import the image into Photoshop and do any alteration and painting over the image by hand as well as coloration changes. Once I feel content with that I move onto typography and then take a step back, do something else for a while and then return to the project to make any last changes.
What do you read for pleasure?
I am a big fan of erotica, so I often read that, but I'm also a pretty big geek for sci-fi and fantasy. I love the Conan books and just about anything post apocalyptic.
Describe your desk
Filthy. I have a jar of candy, an empty can of Starbucks, a couple of cups full of pens and a bobblehead...oh, and a full ashtray and some miscellaneous garbage. Thanks for this question, I'll be cleaning my desk after we're done here.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the Bay Area, California. I guess the biggest way that it influenced me was all of the diversity that surrounded me. I think with being encouraged to have an open mind and experience so many different cultures and ways of living that it broadened and opened me up to new experiences. There were also many avenues and programs for budding writers around the area.
What's the story behind your latest book?
This latest book, the first in the Dark Prince series, introduces a character named D'Rani who is perused by the Prince of the Ninth Level of Hells. Though D'Rani is a bit overwhelmed, she certainly isn't an innocent soul.
What are you working on next?
I am working on the second book of the dark Prince series which goes into further detail about Sajiba, the Prince's servant. It fills the reader in on how he came to be damned to the Hells and his connection with the Prince.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am one of those gamer geeks. I spend many hours playing my favorite current MMORPG. Another favorite past time is creating new characters and stories with my husband. As well as being super supportive, he's very inspirational to me, especially when it comes to erotica.
