Interview with Simon Harding

What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
As a new author, it's all about making people aware. Social media is an absolute jungle, and it doesn't matter how many Twitter followers you have or the number of people who like your Facebook page- it is incredibly hard to get people to see your posts, let alone take action. So for me, it's about spreading the word, literally.
Describe your desk
At the moment it's a mess. 2 weeks of school holidays and a few moments grabbed here and there to write is hardly conducive to a tidy desk. But tidy it I will. Cluttered desk means cluttered mind.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the UK and moved to Australia in my thirties. That change of culture has allowed me to be more observant, more aware of differences. It's really helped me to develop characters and settings
When did you first start writing?
I've been writing forever. For as long as I can remember. I've just never had the time to write a book before. I'm so glad that I made the time to bring my dream to life.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Ancient Tide was inspired by the story of the Lovers of Teruel, a 13th Century Legend from Spain. There was an incredible, fierce love. Ancient Tide is the story of a love so intense that it refuses to die. Once you read the book, you'll understand the connection
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I couldn't handle the idea that I'd spend years writing a book, only on the off chance that someone might pick it up. I'd always assumed that if your book was great, a publisher or agent would sign you up. Only now I know that's not the case. Your book can be the most incredible book ever written, but if a publisher or agent can't see the potential they won't take it on. I look at some of the books that did make it into print and wonder how on earth they were published.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I had always thought it was the creating. Then I discovered the editing. Then the publishing process. Then the marketing. The truth is, I love every part of the process.
What do your fans mean to you?
There is nothing better than someone volunteering how much they enjoyed your book.
What are you working on next?
The sequel to Ancient Tide. I am hoping to release it at the end of this year.
Who are your favorite authors?
Carlos Ruiz Zafon, Ken Follett, Salman Rushdie. I love how Zafon places you in the murky streets of Barcelona. Rushdie makes you concentrate, it's not an easy read, but his sly and subtle jokes just slip onto the page. And Follett? The master story teller.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
When you feel as though your manuscript is going somewhere. At those points, I can't focus on anything other than the chance to write.
