Interview with Simon James

When did you first start writing?
About 6 years ago. I'd just read 4 books back to back, and while I was looking for the next thing to read, I thought, 'why don't I try to write one?'
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
2 things: getting lost in my own world, and other people getting lost in my world.
Who are your favorite authors?
Stephen King, Lee Child, Ian Fleming, Yann Martel, Alfred Lansing, J.R.R. Tolkien, and recently Emily Bronte, after reading Wuthering Heights for the first time.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My Nexus 7 2013 tablet - it's got a good 7" screen with a great resolution. I use the same device to listen to music whilst I read.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Working, coffee, listening to books and music (journey to work), movies, coffee, learning guitar, coffee, family.
Describe your desk
Anywhere I can perch my 7" tablet, stand, and bluetooth keyboard - my desk has been the kitchen table (covered with a map of the world), train tables, back of aircraft seats (though the tablet tends to tip off these), coffee shops, Macdonalds, staff kitchens at lunchtime.
What's the story behind your latest book?
With A Bullet is my latest book - I wanted a short story that featured some of my characters from another work. I knew I wanted to go back in time and explore the background and career of one character, but ended up with another one at the same time. Two for the price of one, if you will. It's a rags to the promise of riches story.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Formatting; style guide; epub corrections; distribution; author profile.
What are you working on next?
Getting my first thriller onto Smashwords for the end of December; and writing the murders of people for my second thriller.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Work - I really enjoy the work I do. My first coffee of the day - instant if I don't have much time, and Frenchpress if I do. Wanting to learn things and do things. Sunshine.
