Interview with Ginger Russell

Published 2014-02-21.
What do you read for pleasure?
I love suspense and murder mystery books. One of my favorite authors early on was Patricia Cornwell.
Describe your desk
Neat and clean with a small stack of books on writing.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a few small towns in Arizona until the age of 12 when my family moved to Phoenix. Honestly, I can't say that where I grew up influenced my writing one way or another. I first began to write poetry and draw at a young age which became a favorite pastime.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing poems at the age of 6, often with a crayon.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I was trying to come up with a really great concept for a graphic novel. When I presented it to an artist that I knew at the time, he advised that he really liked the idea but he didn't have time to work on it. The one page sample I had let him read was some of the best writing that I had ever done, and I knew that I had to do something with it. I began the process of writing a novel on and off over a period of 2 years. It was suggested to me that perhaps that I should consider E-publication as a novella series rather than a novel in print. It was a fabulous idea for which I have to give Larry full credit for. I was so inspired that I went full force and completed the first novella in the series. The second one is already in process and I can't wait to see what lies ahead for Sitara.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is by far one of the easiest sites to work with. I look forward to releasing many more Sitara Novellas over the next few years.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The creative process, and ultimately seeing a reader enjoy the final product.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything.
What are you working on next?
I am currently working on the second novella in the Sitara series. It's release is planned for summer 2014.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
All the possibilities that a new day brings. Isn't life great?
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Listening to music, taking boxing classes, spending time with family, and thinking about writing.
