Interview with Jay Elle

When did you first start writing?
Um...I would have to say third grade. I remember writing a short - couple paragraphs - story about a sister who drank a potion and turned invisible. And while being invisible and out of sight, discovered that she was truly missed by her family. I can't remember how, but she became visible again and that was the end of the tale. And then when I was 14 years of age, I started writing and posting fan-fiction romance stories. It was then that I discovered I had a knack for writing. And I loved doing it. After graduating high school, I took a long break from writing anything. Dealing with "real-world problems" left me drained, stressed and unmotivated.
About two years ago, I started reading fan-fiction again. And that was the spark I needed to pick up the 'pen'.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Well I've always enjoyed writing. I like being able to take the craziness and intrigue in my imagination and put it into words. I used writing as a journal so I could always remember my thoughts or dreams. And I would be so excited and impressed that my brain came up with this 'world', that I would share it with my husband.
One day, I was having a particularly bad day. I couldn't figure out what I wanted out of life. And he suggested I become an author. I already had a passion and talent for writing, so why not make a career out of it. And that's how it began.
Describe your desk
Actually, I don't have a desk right now. I've been typing away on my phone so you could say my desk is everywhere; for instance, my car in the parking lot, my living room on the couch or relaxing on the bed.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has helped by making my dreams a reality. Being totally honest, this site is easy to use and it takes the confusion and frustration out of first-time self-publishing. I'm so glad I stumbled upon this gem.
It doesn't really matter to me if I do become a successful author, all that really matters to me is that I'm able to share my work with someone other than my husband.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I would have to say that the greatest joy of writing for me is the stress relief. But also the feeling it gives as I'm able to fully dive into this fictional world of my creation. It gives me such a freedom.
