Interview with Stephanie Davis

What is your writing process?
My writing process stems from real life situations and then my imagination soars from that point. My ideas tend to start with characters in my head who are having conversations-- usually arguments. I listen to them-- they're so angry, but there's love there too, or desire, or insecurity, or despair-- and I ask myself, what are they fighting about? What happened to them? Who are they? What do they want? Why is life so hard for them?

And then it all starts to come together.

Characters, relationships, and feelings come first. Then setting, plot, and so on tend to filter in around it. The details of the plot, the bones that hold it together, are often the last things I work out; there are parts of the plot I don't know until I get to them in the book, and they happen.

Characters are similarly elusive. A conversation I'm writing may veer off course or get out of hand; I can intend a character to say something, but it doesn't mean she will. My characters often surprise me. And then I realize I was wrong about who they were, and I adjust my perceptions.

I spend a lot of time staring into space. I talk to myself. More importantly, I research whatever I'm writing about.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first story I ever read was a parable in the bible. I remember that I caused me to go deep in thought. And one thought connected to a million other thoughts. I researched in went deeper to get a better understanding so if I ever recalled this parable I would know what I was talking about and how to write about it.
How do you approach cover design?
I don't I leave it all up to Gregory, my Graphic Designer. He know how to create just what I am trying to convey in my writing.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Orange is the New Black mainly because I can relate. She's all Caught Up by Jamila Davis is one of my favorites as well. It is very inspiring and informative. Behind the Wall of Grace is my ultimate favorite. I wrote it for one...LOL. But also because it is a constant motivation to push forward. I know that is only three but I love books, I love to read. That is all to it!
What do you read for pleasure?
For pleasure I read decorating and cooking books. Funny huh?
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Samsung Galaxy tab. I'm in love with Samsung products!
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Social Media, Online promotions and book signings.
Describe your desk
Maybe I should take a picture of my desk. No really, I actually consider myself and organized writer...not!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up primarily in Virginia with my grandparents. Things were a bit rough, we were not as fancy as others but we managed. But I kept a journal to pen down my thoughts, feelings and emotions. That is really where my writing originated.
When did you first start writing?
Well I guess I answered that in my previous question. I started writing when I was very young, keeping a journal. In school, I always had to condense my writing assignments because I would get so carried in my thoughts and imagination that I literally wrote books.
