Interview with J.M. Hope

What is your e-reading device of choice?
I actually have an iPad with apps for multiple reading devices such as iBooks, Aldiko, and Kindle. I love the versatility of it, although it's no fun to try to read outside in the sun!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a really small town in Missouri, but I've also traveled all over the country. I think seeing the contrast of lifestyles in my hometown with other lifestyles in the United States drove me to want to expose my characters and subsequently my readers to some of this experience.
When did you first start writing?
I completed my first novel when I was ten years old. I stored it in a Trapper Keeper and let all my friends read borrow it to read. They were big fans!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Getting out of bed is definitely not easy, especially as I get older. My poor old bones don't like to leave the cushy softness of my bed, but usually my dog is my inspiration to get up. I just hate cleaning up the mess if I don't let her out in the morning!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I teach. And I teach and I teach and then I teach some more. I absolutely love teaching, almost as much as performing! I have also gotten pretty good with Photoshop lately so I have been playing with my cover designs and other design projects.
What is your writing process?
When I was younger it was to just sit in front of a blank screen and start typing up whatever came to mind. With Spinsation, though, I am writing a series. I have to have a level of continuity throughout the books so I make visual organizers, then outline each book and save certain details in an Excel file to refer to later.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Being able to offer my eBook in a variety of formats has really opened up the market for me. I used to publish exclusively on Amazon Kindle, and that is still my primary source of income on eBooks, but there are a great number of readers on nook now, and other eReaders so I can serve a much larger community.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Being able to just sit in the quiet and write for a couple of hours at a time. Life is so full of interruptions for me from family, friends, students, and even Facebook! It's nice to just unplug and spend time with my laptop and my characters.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The latest book I am currently working on and hope to publish later this year. It is based on what my senior year of high school was like as I finished all of the "lasts" of the year and took on new challenges. A lot of people will slack off their senior year because they feel they've earned it, but I focus on Gracie, a character who doesn't know the meaning of "slacking off" and pushes through her senior year to the end.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans are my life blood. I love connecting with them on Facebook especially, because the feedback is direct and doesn't have to go through any third parties. To do a job, I have to be able to make money doing it, and my fans are the ones who provide me with the funds to keep on writing!
