Interview with Victoria Chandler

What motivated you to become an indie author?
Well, I love fantasy and I have so many stories of all types inside me, whether it be romance, suspense, and most especially vampires, I am a true blue old time vampire lover! LOL ..... of course, I was very influenced growing up by watching all the old original romance and vampire movies, to say the least about all the romance and vampire books I read as well! I love the combination of the two actually, the vampire mixed with romance ~ the perfect blend of two very important aspects and facets of our lives.....romance and mystery. They give life more of that "edge", more suspense on one hand, and more of that magical romantic fantasy on the other ....Vampires have always been fascinating to me! They are class, personified (well, perhaps I should say "un-personified" are mysterious, romantic, suave, and pulse with self confidence which is very attractive to most women, well, at least to me! lol .... Vampires are above the "norm", the everyday grind, they take you into another world, a world of the supernatural where nothing is as it seems, and just about anything is possible. It gives your mind the ability to step out of "the box" and into a world of suspense, fear, thrills..while at the same time leaving you almost wanting more of the vampires mystery, his lure, his life of lavishness and nobility .... yes, vampires are especially intriguing and fascinating, I never grow tired of a truly good vampire story! ....You never know, maybe that 'bump in the night" sound you hear late at night, downstairs while you're falling asleep, isn't the dog! :)
. I finally decided to do something with all the stories and imaginations going on in my head, so, here I am, and enjoying every minute of it! I think E-book publishing is the future, it's much more available to people, you can buy and read all from the comfort of home, can't beat that!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is marvelous! They are so user friendly, easy to understand, no overwhelming rules and regulations...... I found it quite by "accident", but I'm so glad I did! I have only just published part one, of one book so far .....but I plan on continuing the saga of "Lucien", the main vampire in BLOODY ROSE right here on Smashwords, it's been a pleasure!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
OH, wow......the greatest joy? I'd have to say, I think it's the sharing of what's inside me, with others. It gives you a "vent", a way of expressing the other side of yourself, because we all have different facets to our personalities, different needs and desires ..... and writing gives a tangible outlet for all my imaginations and dreams .....
What do your fans mean to you?
Well, so far I have only just published part one, of my first book "Bloody Rose ..." ...... so, I'm still to new to have fans, but I believe I will as the story continues, part by part ... ~ I also have so many other romance stories in my head which will be published here as well, which is something I'm really looking forward to!
What are you working on next?
More vampire, and other romance stories ....
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing, I'm usually taking care of the usual family things ..... I love walking on the beach behind our house, dreaming of new ideas and plots, visualizing the charcters and their personalities, ..... (or my all time favorite, chasing the dog down the beach as he takes off for places unknown! lol) ..... when I do have my own time, I love reading either romance or vampire novels ....or perhaps watching some of the really good oldies! :)
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I do a lot of online searching for good books, or perhaps a friend will recommend one. ...... ~ it has to keep my attention from the very beginning or I get bored and that's the end of that ..... it's not always easy finding a worthwhile "holding your breath" kind of story, whether it be a vampire novel, or whatever .... but there are times I do come across some very good novels purely by accident!
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
OH boy! The first story! LOL .... geez, yes, I was a teenager, maybe about 16 or so ...... I titled it "A Vampires Night" ...... of course, that never went anywhere at the time, I don't think I really thought about actually publishing it then .....
How do you approach cover design?
I have mine professionally done..... you have to have the exact right feel though, it has to have that certain "feeling" about it ~ it has to have the characters pretty much the way you imagine them!
Describe your desk
OH, my gosh! LOL ..... a mess! Full of little papers, notes that I write down when I think of them, so as not to lose that idea, or feeling .......... yeah, my desk is a mess, but a happy one! :)
When did you first start writing?
At about, 16 yrs. old ..... not seriously, though. Just ideas, characters, etc....... I "wrote" a story called "A Vampires Night" which, looking back now, was totally "innocent"...... but it was however, a beginning of putting my stories down on paper ...
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in New York City mainly, but have lived in many other countries as well. Growing up in N.Y.C. was fantastic, it is ALIVE with all kinds of people and things to do, all at 4 a.m. if you please! No place like it! It gave me the ability to interact with so many other nationalites and different types of people, that I would end up needing later in life as well. Having lived in Europe as well, I was definately influenced by their old wives tales, and superstitions! Romania and Hungary were so very beautiful, and I picked up a lot of my ideas and "myths" from those people, they were story telling people, by nature! :)
Who are your favorite authors?
OH, without question, Stephen King is my absolute favorite author! He has truly inspired me to really let my imagination go "wild", no thought or idea is to crazy, or to impossible to actually happen, his stories are true page turners! I can't forget Bram Stoker as well, having introduced me to his most fantastic character, Dracula! Anne Rice is also a favorite, and Suzy McKee Charnas ("The Vampire Tapestry" ~1980) which really didn't get much acclaim, but was very good! Lucius Shephard ("The Golden"), ... and Michael Rowe ("Enter,Night") an excellent vamire novel! . ........ but honestly, as far as vampire stories go, I have read so many over the years, it's hard to remember all of them........ which is the same for romance, it's hard to actually remember when you've read so many .... Nicholas Sparks, Jane Austen, Danielle Steele, Barbara Taylor Bradford,Susan Eliz. Phillips, Charlotte Bronte,Louisa May Alcott, as far as romance and just "life" go down in my memory as having influenced me ....... but other authors, such as Mary Shelly, Flannery O'Connor, Kate Chopin, Virginia Woolf, and Laura Ingalls Wilder also come to mind as influences of style and content ..... I guess you judge, by how much of an impact it had on you and your life ...
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The drive and desire to do something different that day, to make a difference, to experience something really feel ALIVE, not just exist!
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The very fist novel I read, as a teenager, was GONE WITH THE WIND ..... and then, I saw the movie! Now, that particular book really did influence me! Scarlett O'Hara, was a fascinating character who had a definate impact on my life!
What do you read for pleasure?
Thrillers, mysterys, romance, vampire stories (lol)......or what's written on the back of the detergent box I'm using! LOL, just kidding, well, actualy not .... that's when you've read and reread all the books you had, and are totally bored! LOL .....but then, as usual, I've got to go and either buy some fantastic mystery or romance story as soon as possible, or start writing another one, MYSELF! :)
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Well, I guess I'm considered "old school" in a way, only because I love my desktop, so I read a LOT of online books that way ...... but yeah, I'd say my tablet, or phone ...
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Well, since this is really my first book to actually be put out there, it's pretty much word of mouth up to this point ..... i do advertsie around town with flyers, and make sure to tell all my neighbors, even the clerks at the convenience stores I freqeuent.....hey, you've got ot get the word out there...... I used to work for a large advertising firm in N.Y.C. (where I was born and raised) and advertsing your product is just about "everything" as far as even getting the readers to want more ...... you have to use just about any means you have at your disposal!
What's the story behind your latest book?
Again, I have so many different types of genres in large boxes, just sitting on my; bedroom shelf, I've got to go through them and actually post them here ......... but as far as BLOODY ROSES, A Love That Will Last Forever .... yeah, its mainly about finding yourself .... she's a young college student, soon to be law student and the things shes living through. which have been hard .... so she takes off to to sort of "find herself" and encournters a lot more than she bargained for!
What is your writing process?
Writing process? LOL ..... I don't really have a writring process, per se. I just write when it hits me! That's the best, really, because you have to scribble it down on some kind of paper or whatever you can find, (or if you're online, even better) as soon as the idea and FEELING hits you ..... so, I don't really have a "process" , that's to stuffy for me, I'm a sort of "fly by the seat of your pants" kind of woman, I love spontaneous, I love unpredictable (which is what a ot of my stories are about actually), .....
Why did I start writing, finally?
Yeah, I wrote my own question there! LOL ...... I started writing FINALLY because I had so much inside me, I had lived so much in my lifetime, lived so many places, met so many different types of people, ..... I"ve been a mom to three loving, kind, generous young men, who are all grown now, ... I have been married for over, oh let's say about.....ah, 600 yrs....LOL!!! :) .... ~ we've traveled, we've been through thick and thin together, we solved so many of our OWN problems that people would come to US for help or advice. So, my reason for writing? Now? It's jsut a matter of timing, it's the right time..........the right timing in life is so important, you have to be in the "flow" of it, not to soon, not to early ...... it's when you KNOW THAT YOU KNOW THAT YOU KNOW......that this is the right time! :
More favorite authors!
Ernest Hemmingway, John Steinbeck, Ray Bradbury, J.R.R. Tolkien, Barbara Cartland, Sidney Sheldon, Irving Wallace, Arthur Hailey, Catherine Cookson, Alistair MacLean, Tom Clancy,Mary Higgins Clark .... oh, yeah, over the years I've read my share! ... so, in so many ways, I was influenced!
