Interview with Magne Holst Bloch

What motivated you to become an indie author?
I found out that it could be done, if I was willing to figure out things for myself and invest a little money. I`ve previously published two books in paper. That went well, but the benefits of ebooks are numerous and substantial. Luckily I found out about Smashwords, so here I am.
What's the story behind your latest book?
From creating a quiz it naturally follows that I aquire some trivia knowledge myself, so that`s allways a good thing. It`s not just the content in my book that I had to read, the ideas to the qustions are something that often comes while reading more generally about a topic.
I also wanted to make a quiz that was a little different. In many quizes there are short questions with short answers. That`s allright for a test of pure knowledge, but as a source for aquiring more knowledge, it is not optimal. So a lot of the qustions in my book are longer. Often providing some general info about the topic, before asking the questions. I think the effect of this is twofold. More info naturally means more potential for learning new stuff. But I also beleve it makes the qustions themselves more interesting. That means that the info given is more likely to get stuck in the brain, as opposed to entering one ear and leaving the other. Not all other quizes has the problems of shortly formulated questions and answers of course, but a great many of them do.
Another benefit of elaborating a little more, is that I got to throw in a little joke here and there, so I hope the readers share my sence of humour.
Describe your desk
I have two desks. One is empty, the other is hopeless.
The one that is empty would have been just fine, if I had just gotten around to use it more often. The problem is that it is usually empty, because my laptop is placed somewhere else.....
The laptop is usually to be found on my hopeless desk, that is, my living room table. On the other hand, at least it is not lonely there. Rather, it is in the company of all sorts of things that are not work-related.
What do you read for pleasure?
Well, non-fiction mostly. As of right now (august 2015), the religion/philosophy/psycology of Buddhism is very interesting to me. Next month, it might be something completely different.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The truth is I haven`t read that much fiction. I read allmost exlusively non-fiction. Allmost everything and anything can be interesting. But if I should choose some novels that I really enjoyed these could probably hit top five:

Naiv. Super. (Erlend Loe (Norwegian))
23-salen (Ingvar Ambjørnsen (Norwegian). Important point: more spesifically, he is from the city of Larvik ! )
Den siste revejakta (Ingvar Ambjørnsen)
1984 ("George Orwell" (Eric Arthur Blair)
Animal Farm ("George Orwell" (Eric Arthur Blair)
How do you approach cover design?
I had some ideas about what should be on the cover. Went online, looking for pictures to use, and found some I really liked. The pictures of the football (soccer) and galaxy complement each other well I think, and it also illustrate the scope of subjects in the quiz.
It`s literally millions of pictures to choose from on the web. If you find something you really like, it is well worth paying a couple of bucks for the right to use them. This is one example of how technology enables people to do things themselves. It takes power from the big publishers out there and gives it to you and me. We don`t have to ruin ourselves to get good quality illustrations. Chances are that what you need is allready out there. It looks good and you can afford it.
Another example of how tech helps self-published authors is the availability of cover design services. I chose someone from Mark`s list. I mailed her the pictures I had found (football and galaxy) and the text that should be on the cover. Beyond that it was up to her to use her creativity. It was a reasonable price and it looks great I think.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
A laptop and an Iphone. I just downloaded the Epub-reader suggested by Smashwords, and discovered that the "Epub-experience", so to speak, comes much closer to reading a book in paper than most of the stuff I`m used to reading online. I really like the Epub-format.
