Interview with Rob Chicken

When did you first start writing?
What's the story behind your latest book?
It's called "The Hidden Planet" and is about a planet that orbits around the Sun, in a position exactly opposite to the Earth's orbit, and hence is totally undetectable to any scientific instrument. It was only because a graduate scientist was calculating the mass of the Solar System that they knew something was there. They sent out 2 satellites, then a space station, but none of them returned. the only clue they had was a report from the space ship that they could see a blue planet.
A second space ship was sent out with space fighter jets on a rescue mission. This their story
What are you working on next?
Book 2 in the same series
Who are your favorite authors?
I would say my favourite author is Bernard Cornwall, but I'm also currently reading a fascinating and curious book by T H White called "The Once and Future King".
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Working. Writing is currently only part time. I also like carpentry, and in the summer, I like to go sailing.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I remember the early science fiction writers like Isaac Asimov. I liked their approach. They never involved scary monsters; they just took science beyond the current technology, and imagined how the world would be with that advancement in science. I remember one story that focused around a hand held electronic device that contained every bit of information about its owner, from financials, education, ideas etc. This was written in the 1950's I believe. Now of course we have such devices.
How do you approach cover design?
I wanted to show off the space ship and jet fighters on the cover, so I created them in a 3D CAD modelling software.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the town of Newport in South Wales (UK). I was a keen swimmer and took up skin diving as a hobby when I was 15 years old. Swimming underwater in the sea is very similar to floating about in space, and this has helped me in my writing.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I showed my manuscript to a publisher once, but it didn't fit in with what they wanted. To conform I would have had to have done a major re-write. I didn't want to compromise in that way. After that I lost heart with publishers, and decided to go it alone.

Scientists have calculated that there is something directly behind the sun, orbiting at the same speed as the Earth and therefore always invisible to all scientific instruments. Two satellites, then a manned space ship are sent out discover what is there but none of them return. In their last message, the manned ship reports seeing a blue planet. This is the story of their rescue.
