Interview with S.C. Banhete

Describe your desk
My lap is my desk. That's all I need, a pile of confy pillows and my notebook. Oh, and music! Always.
When did you first start writing?
College. I moved out to a big city and had to spend about half an hour in a bus to get to the campus so, you find things to occupy your mind. My first novel was born from a building with huge windows beacuse I thought how it would be to write a story that happened in a house with windows like that.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I have a day job at the Health department of my town's City Hall. For now, that's where I get my bread and butter. and money for internet.
What is your writing process?
Usually I have an specific scene in mind and build the story around it. Sometimes a friend gives me an amazing idea and when I can't take it out of my mind, I know I have to write it.
I write whenever I can and often get obecessed with the story and can't do anything else. Parallel works are not a good idea for me, because I'll end up neglecting one.
How do you approach cover design?
I like to talk, to bounce ideas with the person I'm working with. I'm always open to new ideas and concepts, but if I don't like, I don't and I can be very stubborn. Usually I like the cover to hint a specific detail of the story, so when the reader gets to that specific scene they go: "Oh! So that's why that thing is on the cover!"
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Reading was always a part of my life since I was little, so I can't really remember which story was the first, but I had a beautiful Fairy Tales book that I loved (Still have, actually), so the first ones were the classics, Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, Jack and the Beanstalk etc. Fairy Tales taught me that there's no limit to the imagination and that you can creat an entire word if you want to.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes! I was about twelve years old and was obcessed with Sailor Moon. It was called "The Princess of the Silver Swan" or something like that. It wasn't very good, but it was a start.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
*The Physician, Noah Gordon - It's so rich in details and the story pulls you in, the movie is great too.
*Until You, Judith Mcnaught - this was one of the first 'adult novels' I ever read and it's simply delightful.
*Sybil, Flora Rheta Schreiber - They way the author tells the story of this girl with Dissociative Identity Disorder blew my mind, it's impossible to stop reading although some parts are really cringeworthy.
*Nothing Lasts Forever, Sidney Sheldon - It's Sidney Sheldon, do I really need to say why I love it?
*Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen - This was the first time I read a novel with no physical contact between the protagonists, like no kisses, no hand in hand, no hugs and still it's the most amazing love story ever!
What do you read for pleasure?
These days mostly fanfictions (Don't laugh or squint at me! There are really good authors in the fandoms!)
I love Vampire novels and love stories in general.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small country estate, with parents, grandparents, a little brother and dogs. It was great fun but we didn't have any neighbours my age, so it was a little isolating too. Even in school I was a loner and I think that helped my writing, because I have no problems in being alone and inside my head. Having no one to play with forces you to use your imagination as well.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
It's tough to break into the industry! And expensive. Becoming an indie author seemed the logical path, but also I want to inpire people, to bring a smile to their faces and lightness to their lives. Money and fame doesn't really matter at this point.
