Interview with Stephen James Frost

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The endless possibilities of new ideas forming fresh sentences!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I work as an Architect, Inventor, Designer and 3D printer. I also love to be outdoors and travel.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I look for the themes I enjoy and simply search all the places that I can find ebooks.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Vividly! I read it a few years later and thought it was horrible, but a good first effort!
What is your writing process?
An idea will flash into my head and I sit down immediately and write it out. Once it's out of my head, I can take the time to formulate the characters and story line, or expand on what I already have.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
It probably wasn't the first story I ever read, but the first I remember was from the age of seven when I received my first Famous Five book by Enid Blyton for my birthday. I remember marveling at the wonderful movie my imagination produced as I read. To this day I still create movies in my mind as I read a book!
How do you approach cover design?
I focus on what has been the main ingredient in the book and create images and atmosphere to match the story.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I love all things Stephen King. His characters are phenomenal. 11.22.63 is possibly one of his best books and one of my favourites. I also love Dan Brown's amazing research capability. His depth of knowledge is astonishing. The Conversation With God Series by Neale Donald Walsch has had the greatest impact on my life, by opening my mind to limitless possibilities and showing me what truth FEELS like! The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, which I read many, many years ago when I was seventeen, expanded my imagination by leaps and bounds comes tied with my set book for O-level Literature, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin which simply sparked my love of the romantic past. Finally, one of my friend's books, which is yet to be published, The Union by Linda Bromley, is possibly one of the most exciting and surprising science fiction/fantasy/romance stories I have had the privilege to read.
What do you read for pleasure?
Mainly fantasy and science fiction, but I love a good horror/thriller and also conspiracy novels.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Choice or happenstance? I was given and iPad by my partner and I have an iPhone, so either of those depending on location and requirement!
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I have yet to find the best way to market my books, but I'm always open to advice!
Describe your desk
Small. Far too small!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Zimbabwe and as a gay man, that makes for some interesting stories and some scary memories! However, leaving sexual orientation out of it, it was a wonderful place to grow up.
When did you first start writing?
When I was thirteen. I wrote a short story; eighty hand-written pages about a boy in love! Big surprise, right? I also wrote a lot of poetry.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest published book is a science fiction romp across the galaxy called Star Gods. A group of friends on vacation find an ancient alien ship that transports them across the galaxy just before it self destructs. They meet the powerful race of aliens that left the ship on earth and have to rely on them to get them safely home, but their only means of achieving that, will take them seven years! They accidentally cause a war between the Jamenai, (the aliens that are assisting them) and another race, so they have to go on the run from both races. Two allies help them escape capture, but eventually the aliens do find them.

What happens from there, is all in the book!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Having gone through the arduous process of contacting literary agents and publishing companies and reading the stories of how it really is nothing more than a hit and miss industry, I decided to take matters into my own hands. When I see certain books that have been published and well marketed, even though their content is less than inspiring, you begin to understand that anyone can be a famous author, but not everyone can be a good author. I hope one day to be both, but not because of a marketing machine, but rather because of my writing's own merit.
