Interview with Steve Hertig

Who are your favorite authors?
Robert A. Heinlein, J.R.R.Tolkien, Spider Robinson, Fred Saberhagen, and Larry Niven to name only a few of the scifi greats. Hemingway, Twain, Poe, Doyle of classic literature.
Is there more Fractime to come?
Yes! Far Flung is in brainstorming stages with initial work on the prelude. Far Flung tells of the a man and his not-so trusty AI struggling to figure out how to survive and return to the Milky Way after being flung into inter-galactic space by freak convergence of gravity waves. Far Flung is set in the Fractime universe but otherwise separate from the stories surrounding the Universal War.

Also, Eternity (Part 7) has launched. It is the last part of the Fractime Saga surrounding the Universal War. Eternity is set after Equilibrium and features the teenage Mackinac twins, Mac and Zuni, discovering the multiverse is ending yet again and only they can stop it.

In addition, other separate short stories set in the Fractime multiverse are taking shape. So check Smashwords in the future for more Fractime adventure!
Do you do your own proofreading?
Errors! As the Fractime Saga is now over 200000 words. Each one extracted from usually a minimum of three drafts then a final draft with many screen read throughs, two or three paper copies to proof, read aloud programs, author read aloud (dog leaves the office), grammar checker (Style Writer), spelling checkers pre- and post-typing, plus Word 2007's two cents worth during the actual battle to write correctly and creatively. Unfortunately the War has both wins and losses. All I can say is I'm a terrible proofreader. Reading over an error can be annoying and take you out of the moment and for those moments I'm sincerely sorry. The many thousands of dollars needed to hire a professional proofreader is beyond reality for a free book. But know, I continue to find and correct errors and update each part frequently so update your elib to share or reread a better copy. Posting an error on Fractimes's Facebook page is always appreciated!
Does writing come easy?
No! My wife says I'm A-type. I have developed a great respect for copy editors and continue to find errors in the copy after countless hours proofing.. My sincere apologies! I know how distracting finding an error is for the reader. Furthermore, as a technical writer for so long shifting gears into readable dialogue didn't automatically come easy.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
This one is easy. During the writing process, there are times when I become quite emotional about and involved with what's going on with a character, and if I can succeed in putting those feelings into words, that is joyous.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
My wife and I live on a 50-acre lifestyle block in northernmost New Zealand that takes most of my spare time. If I'm not cutting down then up trees for the wood stove for winter heat, I'm pruning fruit trees or berry vines or just doing general maintenance around our land. I help out in the garden when my wife lets me and I fish as well as hunt and trap wild pigs for food.
