Interview with Steven Sheeley

When did you first start writing?
I started writing in Sept. of 2013
What motivated you to become an indie author?
It's too hard to become discovered in this day and age, in my opinion. Based on that I decided to go the non-traditional route and self publish my books.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The single greatest joy I get from writing is being able to share these stories with others.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans are the single most important thing to me. If it wasn't for them, I would be writing these stories and then placing them in the closet. My fans allow me to share my stories and worlds with them and I am honored they do so.
What are you working on next?
The Chronicles of Sanctuary is a 10 book series so suffice it to say, for the near foreseeable future, I'll be working on them.
Who are your favorite authors?
Almost to many to list: David Eddings, David Weber, John Ringo, Ben Bova, Issac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, Tom Clancy, Clive Cussler, Dan Brown, Stephen King and a plethora of others.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend my time marketing my books, writing articles for the website and with my family. I also putter around the house and tend to our garden and chickens.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
On Goodreads, by recommendations of my friends there.
What is your writing process?
My writing process is my own. I'm a seat-of-the-pants, structured outline, meandering, guided plot kinda writer. Depending on which day of the week it is.
How do you approach cover design?
Cover design for me is such an important part of the process. I have the hardest time pulling the "vision " of the cover from my head and translating it to the artist. I feel that the cover of my books are the single most important part in gather new readers and making them into fans so I spend a lot of time and effort to make them as appealing as possible.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read most anything, really. Mostly though it is in the Science Fiction, Post Apocalyptic and Dystopian genres.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I use a Samsung Galaxy Tablet with both the Kindle and the B&N apps installed. Most of my eBooks are Kindle books.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born in Minneapolis, MN them moved to Pensacola, FL to a much more relaxed style of living. From a larg3e city to a rural area. I believe that this gave me a view point of both sides of the fence and has helped my writing. My military background also heavily shaped my writing style.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
What inspires me to get out of bed every morning is the intense "need" to write and to experience life to it's fullest. I live in a very rural area of West Virginia , where every one knows everyone and I do NOT miss the hustle and bustle of the city. No traffic noises, no sirens, no gunshots (Well, except for hunting season), very little distractions.
