Interview with Suenammi Richards

Describe your desk
It is everywhere. Who can be limited by a solitary place. Right now its my fainting couch.
When did you first start writing?
I've been writing since I was very young. I started with poetry at around 8 or 9. As I grew older I matured as a writer and attempted my first novel in high school. Its handwritten in a spiral notebook next to my other books. After a few failed attempts I finally finished my first published novel in 2010.
What's the story behind your latest book?
This book starts a romance sci-fi fantasy series I've wanted to write for years. Clair and Sergei are the start of a spiritual and social revolution that ends the world to start it anew.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I love reading and I love books. As I got older I realized I wasn't finding the stories I would like to read. There was very little when I was growing up that reflected me as an African American woman. I wanted to see more multicultural stories, more like the experiences I've lived.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords was and still is my first publisher. Its the convenience of not having to commit to a single platform so that my readers can read in the ways they want to and not be dictated to.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Its the rush of the story coming together. I hardly plan my work I write by the seat of my pants. Nothing on this earth feels like stringing together the perfect sentence with proper pitch, cadence and punctuation. Its the closet thing to magic I've ever felt.
What do your fans mean to you?
They mean a community. The things I talk about in my books are heavy and not usually too light of a read. The people who dig that are more than fans, I consider them my tribe. These are my people.
What are you working on next?
Well this book starts an 18 book arc. The next one is called Shuttered Vision and it challenges race and class mostly as I pair a Hollywood movie producer with a struggling indie visual artist. This one will start the puzzle pieces to fitting together from this latest book So a Psychic and a Rocket Scientist Walk into a Bar.
Who are your favorite authors?
I'm pretty old school. I read anything Johanna Lindsey, Elizabeth Lowell and Karen Marie Moning write. I'm pretty taken with Anne Stuart and Jayne Ann Krentz. All hail Diana Gabaldon. Neil Gaiman writes a lovely yarn and I've been known to do Stephen King when the lights are on.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My story. I'm still telling it and I'm in the middle of it. I see my progress in the characters in each book I write.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm actually a big nerd and I love education which is what my degrees are in. I focus on game based learning initiatives, play video games, read of course. My private love is music. I've trained to sing Opera and so I love to perform when I can and attend any live music event or festival.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I use Twitter actually. There is a great network of indie authors out there I try to support as much as I can.
