Interview with Rick Cave

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Ohio, and I wish I could honestly say it influenced my writing, but my interests sparked my writing. I used to draw comics and I began enjoying telling the story more than drawing the pictures.
When did you first start writing?
In drawing the stories, I "wrote" those since I was a kid. I switched to purely writing around 30 years ago.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is split into two parts. The main character is accused of murder, and in the second part, one of his heroes goes missing.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I truly got tired of writing stories and doing nothing with them. It really wasn't fun to just say "Hey, I finished another story!" I wanted to get my material out for people to read.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
They have helped get my book out to a select group of readers that otherwise would have never seen any of my stories.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I enjoy the creativity of wiritng. Developing the story, fleshing out characters and creating the world around them. An old saying is, "write what you know." I know these characters because I used to draw them. I know their ins and outs, what they're about. It made sense to write stories involving them.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans are those who purchase your material and (hopefully) enjoy what you've written. They are the ones who truly help establish an author. Without those who read your material, you have gained nothing.
What are you working on next?
I am currently working n the fourth in the "Superheroes Inc." line, subtitles "Horrors." My heroes face an army of monsters that are being randomly released on Los Angeles, and they have to figure out who is releasing them.
Who are your favorite authors?
Wish I could say I have a favorite. I'm probably the only writer who doesn't read other people's works. Mainly because I don't want to be influenced in what write and have others say I stole an idea.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The thought of the new day, and what it brings for me. I have ideas, and want to write them out, and I never know what the world around me may bring on a particular day., Plus, I have two cats that are insistent about getting their food in the morning.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I have a job which I go to. i work around very unique people, and they have been the basis for recent characters. I also watch televsion, but don't have access to anything recent. Watch Netflix a lot, or my DVD collection.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Many stories...can't really remember the first.
What is your writing process?
Pretty basic. Ideas, thoughts and getting them down. With my present book, I know exactly in what order everything is happening, and what is going on. It pretty much writes itself at that point.
How do you approach cover design?
I think of the title of my book, then start imagining what I'd like as the image that will "jump out" at the readers. Once I know what I'm looking for, I go about getting it made.
