Interview with Susan Hart

Published 2013-12-22.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was for a newspaper serial in Australia when I was a teenager and I was thrilled.
What is your writing process?
I get the premise then work out the plot in my head then usually just go for it, rewriting and writing as I go. Once I have the first chapter and the ending and some scenes, I then plot out more scenes, if it's a longer work. On short stories I get the little idea then sometimes design a cover for it first.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
It was a child's story, The Wind In The Willows, I think. There are a lot of great ideas and premises in that book. After that I got into Sci-Fi from my dad, and have also loved that genre. I am a The Twilight Zone and Star Trek (every series) fan from the beginning.
How do you approach cover design?
I go to an established website for photos, purchase them, and usually, since I've been so busy lately, get a photo and just design the title etc. Occasionally I like to actually create my own design.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Time Machine by HG Wells (strong Sci-Fi story); The Hunchback Of Notre Dame by Victor Hugo (terrific emotions and drama); The Wind In The Willows (great storytelling); The Gift Of The Magi by O'Henry (incredibly selfless and emotional little plot); and probably, any storyline from Star Trek: The Next Generation.
What do you read for pleasure?
Usually erotic thrillers like the Shades Of Grey trilogy and my own thrillers or any odd book that piques my interest. I have a preference for romantic and erotic thrillers like my own series, The Foxworthy Files (currently being rewritten one by one into full length novels from novellas). However, I loved the Harry Potter series and I also enjoy odd books like the Guiness Book of World Records, for instance.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I think I am getting a Samsung tablet for Christmas!
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Just getting my books on well-established sites, have en eye-catching cover, and writing a good "blurb" for the book. Am now trying the Smashwords coupon offerings as well. I also believe in quantity publishing/writing (if also quality) as well as short stories and then the longer stories to round out my catalogues
Describe your desk
I have a separate at home office with two desks and a large monitor because my eyes are getting old, and a newish mini-Mac. The only distractions at times are my two cats when they get hungry. I also have some books and mementos surrounding me.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I actually grew up in several countries (I was born in England) and I guess the different cultures and people have given me many ideas for stories.
When did you first start writing?
When I was a teenager, then there was a gap, then I wrote pretty crummy stuff for a while which was unpublished, then a couple of good screenplays, then thanks to computers and the Internet, I rebooted myself and am pleased with the way things are going.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It's set in Santa Barbara, California, and features a sexy luxury yacht owner and captain who decides to start a tour business but with his very first three customers, he doesn't do too well. On the other hand, there are two women available and he does pretty good with them both - to start with at least. This one is called Kill Schiffer and it's up on Smashwords under Susan Hart. It's my favorite genre, and an erotic and romantic thriller.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Money and fame, pure and simple. Also, I'm independent and can control my own hours and what I publish and write.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I used Smashwords a year or so ago, but that was before I started to take off and now I'm back because not only do they have their own site, they also publish for me to three major sites plus some new ones. This saves me a lot of time, and time is money.Their dashboard is incredibly easy to use and I love the fact that your stories get published on their site immediately, plus you can decide where you'd like them to publish, if for instance you already publish on a few sites.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
It gives you a rush and you know if you get excited when writing, then hopefully readers will to. Also, it's something I've always loved and now I can make my living doing it.
