Interview with Susan M B Preston

Published 2013-08-25.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a beautiful town in the Borders of Scotland. Like the characters in my book series, we walked everywhere. There were buses and cars, but I either walked or rode my bicycle.

The rolling hills, the silver river, the history... I had a blessed childhood. Conflict? Yes, that too. But we had to learn to come to terms with it... and get on with it.
When did you first start writing?
In Primary School. One of my essays took all the book. As I recall it was a mystery story. :)
What's the story behind your latest book?
The story behind my book series is the growth of the early church, and the challenges they faced in the First Century AD
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I chose to be an indie author because the genre for Christian, historical fiction is very narrow, and the story wanted to be told.

It is possible to read the Bible 'ho-hum' and not really think about what it must have felt like for the people. I have tried to 'walk In the shoes' of those early Christians.

Someone described it as 'Bible study come to life'. The people were real... I hope I did them justice with the series
How did Smashwords help you publish your eBook?
I followed the free step-by-step Style guide and there were no errors in the formatting when it was uploaded. I really appreciated that Guide.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Seeing it develop. The characters took on their own lives and became part of our family.
What do your fans mean to you?
Important people. I owe them the best I can do... and I enjoy hearing from them.
What are you working on next?
Part 3 in the series. It is in draft form at present and It continues the story... Will not say any more at present. There might be a few surprises :)
Who are your favorite authors?
Like many people I have enjoyed the works of JRR Tolkien. Why? Because there are no loose ends. As for other authors... I enjoy a well-written tale. I enjoy some of Lynn Austin's historical fiction, and Charles Swindoll's Great Lives from God's Word.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I very rarely do not write. If it is not a book, it is one of my blogs. I also produce my own book trailers, and try and keep my website updated. Hospital appointments have kept my husband and I busy in the last few months, and we are looking forward to a long-awaited holiday.
How do you approach cover design?
I am very blessed. I have a friend who is an incredibly talented photographer. We both think about the cover photo... and end up with something completely different and, I think, brilliant. Then another friend, who is a 'Photoshop expert', does the titles for the cover.

It is all done by email... the photographer is in Tasmania, Australia, the Photoshop friend is in Chicago, US and I am in Western Australia.
