Interview with T.A. Sturgeon

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small market town in southern England, called High Wycombe. This had little influence on me, the area, that is ... My influences came from those I read, Pam Ayers, Burns, Rossetti, Burns, and all the greats of growing up, plus my intense home-life with a bi-polar Mother, I grew up quick when I was 13 years old ... Poetry has always been my first love ... Novels happened only when the ode in me died ... I needed a survival plan ... Novels were it ...
When did you first start writing?
I started writing at the age of 12 years ... My first poem won awards. They did think it was written by someone else because they couldn't understand that a kid, of my age, could find those words. I guess I proved them wrong. I was reading poetry when I was about 6 ... It progressed from there to writing lyrics for songs, written on a bass guitar ...
What's the story behind your latest book?
Champagne Hurricane is all about a Rock n Roll love story. Yeah, okay, we all read about Kurt and Courtney, and we loved it. But I always asked the question, as with my muso marriage, when the lights go down, what's the real story? ... Well, this is the real story, this is what happens ... Life can rip you apart or make you whole, it depends on which side of the tracks you crash and burn ... You have to keep keeping up ... That story never ends, I can promise you that ...
What motivated you to become an indie author?
What I have to say, well, I'm not sure main stream could handle it. The tale I have to tell is the same the whole world over. The music business can build you just as quickly as it can ground you, indefinitely. From a distance it looks like you can conquer a world, but the real hard work says something else, just as if you were trying to be a novelist. You might have the greatest song, or story in the world, to tell, but, unless you tell it in the right tune, with the right lyrics, it means nothing. I tell my story because its the only one I know.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has opened a door that I didn't think existed for a writer such as myself. No only am I a published Author ... I am also Publishing myself ... Double bonus ...
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
... Writing a novel, poetry, anything, for my own escape, thinking it might not even register with another being, and then finding, to my amazement, they read it and totally connect with me over it ... That's the biggest compliment, ever, and the moments I live for ... If I can achieve that ... all my hard work has paid off ... NEXT ...
What do your fans mean to you?
I don't class them as 'fans' ... They're my friends, their input is important to me ... If they could feed me a story-line to write, regarding The Manley Family, I'd be right there with them ... It's a family concern, I like it that way ... There are no fans, just family ...
What are you working on next?
Ooh, my next project, well, that will be Book 2 of the Champagne Hurricane Trilogy ... ROCKET IN A POND, due to hit SMASHWORDS in early September ... I was trying for a release in August, but the PRESS OFFICE didn't keep to their end of the bargain, so, I have a Sept deadline instead ...
Who are your favorite authors?
Favorite Authors? Jeez, that's a hard one because I came from a background of poetry, but, if you poked around under the surface you'd find Mr S. King, Mr D. Koontz, and a myriad of dangerous groundsmen ... See, I'm a bit of an outsider ... After reading so much horror, over the years, how can a crazy mind, such as mine, find sex and romance in a world full of death and destruction? ... Funny, but I'm still asking myself that ... As I reply ...
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My everyday job!!! Even as a part-time Writer I still hold down an every-day job, as hard as that sounds. Writers, who start at the bottom and work their toward the top, such as I, always have a plan B ... If I'm not at my desk, 8 - 5, them I'm writing, Editing or Publishing ... Lets face it, even after a heart attack at 45, there's ALWAYS a reason to get up every day, even if it's just to upset the neighbours with loud, obnoxious music, I class my job as done ...
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I have a million books to Edit or Publish. I thought this would be a hobby, how wrong was I??? Apart from that, I have family who are way too demanding, because I tend to forget them when lost in my latest Manuscript. I write lyrics, and party, as if I might not see another year out. I'm classed as Terminally Ill, so I try to drink and party, visit pals and try be in as many places as I can before my time is called. My life can be a long weekend in Canada one month, and then a week sucking it up in Amsterdam, the story never ends ... Life's too damn short and we're a long time dead ... You work it out ...
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I don't read that much ... I'm too busy writing ...
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yep, I do indeed remember the first story I wrote. It was for a smoking detention at school and it was how a kid rolled a huge joint and burnt the Science Block down. I had another detention for mentioning the word 'joint'!!!!!!
What is your writing process?
I don't really have a process. I see the story running as a movie in my head and I try to write the script! Is that a process? I'm not sure. I do have a huge collection of Writer's Notes! Is that classed as a process?
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I remember the first POEM I ever read ... Wow, it was in a Sunday Supplement and was the best thing I ever read. That was what opened my wonderful world of words ... I haven't look back since ... And that was over 40 years ago ....
How do you approach cover design?
All my cover designs are done by myself. I can see the book cover as I write the book. Luckily for me, I have a lot of years behind a lens, having studied Photography at College, and have a large collection of pictures to take covers from. I also studied Fine Art & Design, so cover designs and concepts are one of my favorite subjects ...
