Interview with Tony Bertot

What are you working on next?
I am currently working on The Tragedy Chronicles;

Tragedy, a taker of souls, has managed to avoid the scrutiny of the Angels and has become a threat to the balance between good and evil. Discovered too early and to avoid her being vanquished by the Angels, Lucifer reincarnates her into a child (Char) and the search begins. When discovered there is not much the Angels can do as they are sworn to protect and serve mortals and so the battle to win Tragedy over to the good side begins.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I am retired and living in Arizona where the weather allows me to enjoy the outdoors. I play racquetball, paddleball, pickleball, swimming when the weather permits and of course writing.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Playing pickleball, paddleball & racquetball.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Actually I never have the time to read.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was Hell Train. Placed in in Fantasy Fiction (part of it anyway). I finally finished Hell Train and published it in March of 2012.
What is your writing process?
When an idea comes into my head I write it down in a notebook I keep in a folder. When I actually start writing I have two spreadsheet next to me. One I enter the names of any characters I create along the way and the other I use to enter where I left off at each chapter for cases where the story is not a continuously flow from chapter to chapter..
How do you approach cover design?
I usually let the publisher decide on the cover. However, given the choice of three covers I let my fans decided. I send out an email asking for their choice and the majority wins. After-all without your fans your are a sitting in a rowboat, heading towards a 300 foot drop without a paddle.
Describe your desk
Partially cluttered most of the time.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born and raised in New York City. I use to tell stories to my friends and later on to my kids and their friends. I seem to have the knack to make up stories at the drop of a hat. Later in life I wrote a short story for my daughter Nancy called Hell Train. I later on published it. I also wrote a story for the son of one of my colleagues called Mrs. Puntillo's Circus which she read to the class dressed as a clown. I got a three foot card from the class thanking me for the story it meant alot to me and I think that was the incentive to start putting my stories to print.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
On my last day of work, as I was leaving the office for the last time, a colleague said "Hey Tony now you'll have time to write a book." As I got into the elevator holding the box filled with the stuff that had been on my desk it hit me that now I will have the time to do anything and everything I have always wanted to do.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Receiving positive feedback on how much someone enjoyed the book.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans are like the oars for rowboat. They are the reason for moving forward and can stop you dead in the water.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is; The Tragedy Chronicles. In a world unseen by mortals are Gods emissaries, Angels and Lucifer's followers Takers. Angels guide souls to their next destination while Takers gather souls for Lucifers' army. Takers are usually vanquish centuries before they can threaten an Angel. However, this is the story of Taker who managed to remain below the Angels radar and grow to become the most powerful Taker to have ever existed. Her name is Tragedy.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle and laptop.
When did you first start writing?
I actually wrote my first book several years before I ever published a book. My daughter told me about Fantasy Fiction and I decided to try it with Hell Train (under the pseudonym of Tonada). I actually published Hell Train in 2012 through CreateSpace.

I also wrote several short stories for kids in my neighborhood;
- Diamond and Crystal - two girls who were called into the past to fight some menacing dragons.
- Gabby saves a Turtle - little hears a turtles cry for help.
- Bailey the Dragon Slayer - girl finds an egg that belongs to a dragon. She actually becomes the Dragon saver.
- Mrs. Puntillo's Circus - kids are asked to step in when the performers don't make it to the circus.

More to come.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords makes it very easy to have my books distributed to the other sellers. Also Smashwords is much easier to work with. I plan to use Smashwords as my primary distributor for all of my future books.
Who are your favorite authors?
Agatha Christie, Stephen King, John Grisham, Alfred Hitchcock, Isaac Asimov. Dean Knootz
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I was a kid and we use to receive Alfred Hitchcock's magazine of short stories.
What do you read for pleasure?
Actually, now that I am retired I seldom read unless I am doing research for my next book. I spend much of my time playing racquetball, pickleball and when the weather permits it, swimming.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I cannot tell you which of the various marketing campaigns I've tried worked. However I can list them for you and you can try them yourself.
