Interview with Teresa K Conrado

Published 2014-07-02.
What are you working on next?
The Kelnaria Chronicles: Book Two: The Demon Within
Who are your favorite authors?
J.R.R. Tolkien, R. A Salvatore, Tracey Hickman and Margaret Weiss, J.K. Rowling, Christopher Paolini
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Where's My Mother?, I really wanted to know how that book ended and I wanted to learn how to read it for myself.
When did you first start writing?
I was twelve. That is when I started wanting to be a journalist and a rock star! LOL Started with lyric writing and poetry and eventually it lead into creating my own stories. I gave up on journalist due to yellow journalism issues, so I decided that creating my own worlds and people was my best avenue for creativity.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Telling a story that I feel comes from somewhere that needs to be told. I am not sure where the story came from, but the characters seem so real and the worlds seem so vivid, that it is a burning desire for me to write their stories and give them life.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I have a business I run with my husband performing property maintenance. I have two children - enough said there, every mom will know what I mean! I am an avid gamer. Mostly into MMO's like Ever Quest 2, Guild Wars series, Final Fantasy. And I am very much addicted to The Sims franchise. And lets not forget about reading!
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. It was about a young girl that fell in love with a vampire. But that story line is probably a bit over used now a days, so I doubt it will ever be published. It was called The Pale Moon. Wrote it when I was about 12 or 13 years old.
What is your writing process?
A bit like Mark Twain. I am a Gemini, so I am a jack of all trades, master of none. Which means in the writing world, I usually have about 5 books going on at once. I write them to a certain point, stop and focus on the one that I think people will enjoy the most. At this time, that just happened to be the Kelnaria series. Ihoitae really needed me to tell his story!
How do you approach cover design?
I just let it come to me. Usually in a dream - or somewhere inconvenient like the bathroom! LOL
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Instead of Books, I am going to go with series. Being an avid lover of fantasy novels, you have to go with a series because there is almost always at least three books per series. So, naturally, Lord of the Rings would be number one! The Drizzt D'Ourden novels from Forgotten Realms (Dungeons and Dragons). The Tales of the Otori series by Lian Hearn. Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King. And the Dragon Lance series. I have more that I love, but I can read and re-read and re-read all of these books over and over again and never get bored with them. I can relive them constantly and their characters just come to life for me. I always feel like I travel out of space and time when I read these series by these authors.
