Interview with T.M. Brown

What is your e-reading device of choice?
My son bought me a Surface for Christmas. I love it so much. Its an amazing thing to see yourself on such a device...
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I leverage a combination of techinques, social media (FB,Twitter, Goodreads, AskDavid, etc. ) I also have a website, use email and love to just chat with people that I meet in my travels.
Describe your desk
I like to work in a clean, neat environment. One of the first things that I did when I decided to make a go of this thing was to paint my home office a nice deep blue. I spend a lot of time in my home office, so I wanted it to be comfortable.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I like the control I have over my product...and to be honest, I found it be less expensive and time consuming than going the traditional route.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I'm originally from Baltimore, Maryland. During the 60's, it was a very segregated city with lots of cultural pockets. My grandmother raised me, therefore her views were my views until I had a chance to interact with other cultures. I write about this often.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest story, Struggles of the Women Folk, begins in the 1940s. It is loosely based on stories that my grandmother shared with me over the years...I built my characters around her stories...
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It's so convenient to publish using this method. I can schedule promos, reduce book prices, monitor potential readers..I love it.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love it when readers tell me that they are emotionally moved by my story. I hope that they are encouraged by my characters.
What do your fans mean to you?
The readers (not sure I can call them fans yet) mean everything to me. Let's face it. It's hard to make a living by writing. It's the encouragement that I receive from the readers that keeps me going. Knowing that I have a voice that they want to hear.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My children, (now grown and mking thier way in thier world) inspire me. I want them to see the benefits that come from hard work. I want them to see what's possible by stepping out of the box to make one's dreams come true.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Usually thinking about writing, how to market my books, or just chillin with friends and family.
How do you approach cover design?
I try to select something that really fits with the storyline. Sometimes its abstract and other times, its something that I've created myself, such as the cover for Struggles of the Women Folk.
