Interview with Tara V. Thompson

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
My two favorite hobbies are reading and traveling, both of which have inspired my book series. I love reading science fiction, fantasy, and crime novels. In my free time, I take day trips all over the South. I enjoy exploring new places close to my home too.
Describe your desk
My desk is a mix of scrap paper, post-its, and organized files - typical strategic chaos.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I've lived all over the South. I was born in Georgia, and now I have found my way back there. I also have lived in South Carolina, Alabama, and Florida. There is something unique about traveling in the South because it is the intersection of so many different cultures, all at a slower pace than most places in the US.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing for me is re-reading something that I wrote previously and finding that I still connect with the story. (Even though I will always find something to tweak, no matter how small.)
What are you working on next?
I am working on the next book in the series, which will take Anna and her family on vacation to Pensacola, Florida.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing when I was a kid with prompts from teachers. It has only been recently that I have started writing fiction and poetry again. My current location has certainly inspired me!
What's the story behind your latest book?
I was inspired by my recent move to Savannah and my joy of exploring this new city. I have always enjoyed reading books that take me to new places in my imagination, so I wanted to share some of the experiences that I have had with kids in the hope that they too will be able to take new adventures, whether in their minds or in person.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have noticed the trend towards e-readers, especially with kids who have always had access to electronics. I thought Smashwords was the perfect way to connect with those types of readers.
Who are your favorite authors?
One of my favorite children's book authors is Madeleine L'Engle.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The adventure to see and learn new things.
