Interview with Tamara Merrill

When did you first start writing?
I've been writing my whole life. As soon as I could print I started making books.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. I actually do. It was a picture book about my dog. Not much plot but I was 4.
What motivated you to become an author?
I actually thought I'd grow up and live in a loft in Manhattan and write fabulous books and paint amazing pictures so no matter what "other job" I've been busy doing, in the back of my mind I've been planning to publish.
Who are your favorite authors?
Oh goodness. If it has words on it I read it. I'd like to sound very highbrow and say something really clever but the truth is I love everything I read, sure, some books are better than others but I don't really know a single name I'd call my favorite.
What are you working on next?
I'm currently working on book 2 of this series and I'm very excited - no spoilers - but things are a bit rocky in the family!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love the characters - they actually talk to me! Well, not really but I do feel like each one has a mind of their own and the story flows from them.
What do your fans mean to you?
As soon as have some - I'll let you know. But for now my friends and family are the best, the support me, encourage me, and we have fun together.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Coffee!!! Life is good. I usually have a positive attitude and I get up early. I recently lost my miniature schnauzer, PJ, and I admit I don't always go out for the long morning walk any more.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading, reading, reading!
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Just like any other book. I read the blurbs, listen to NPR, see an ad. If it catches my eye I read it.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Self Publishing is the way to publish. It's quick it's easy and it's fun. I'm not successful yet but I hope to update this question soon.
How do you approach cover design?
Very carefully! I seem to be out of step with main stream covers - they all look alike to me. I'd like my books to be different but "they" say that if I want to sell I should look more like others in my category. Hmmm.....not sure what to do.
