Interview with Tania Smith

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, I was a new Mum and started writing stories for my Son about him, his adventures and all the things he could achieve in life, they are safely tucked away in a book for his children to read one day
What is your writing process?
With no formal qualifications I don't have a process as such, I find that if I sit with the images, the photographs, words just come from them, for me it is about the feelings the images invoke. The words come from there.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I remember reading Charlotte's Web at school, becoming completely engrosed in the story and not wanting to put it down so I could find out the ending, it challenged my thinking and made me view spiders in a whole new light.
Describe your desk
Messy.... very Messy.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The story is about remembering how special each day is, it is about taking time out from the things we do to survive in the world and opening our eyes to the pictures nature paints for us. We all get caught up in living and forget the planet we live on, we conform to what is expected of us by society and we forget we are unique.
It's about getting in touch with what is real.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Letting it take me away... getting caught in the flow of feeling, creating magic.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My boys.
The Sunrise.
The Ocean.
And the mystery of what the day will bring.
What do you read for pleasure?
Anything that takes my mind away from normal and challenges my views.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
It's all a whole new world for me, I guess I am about to find out, planning to start with social media and see where it leads from there.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up on a farm in Victoria, our family holiday trips to the beach inspired my love of the ocean, then and now I can sit for hours lost in the magic of the waves and all that live under them.
What do your fans mean to you?
Even while writing the first book and the fear of showing it to people, wondering if it would be good enough etc. It was the first few people who inspired me to keep going, to put it out there. I am grateful for everyone who reads and shares this work.
