Interview with Tani Shane

How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
When I discovered Smashwords I felt as though I had been given a boon. Publishing my book here was really easy. My main reason for publishing with Smashwords is that my book will be available on several sites simultaneously and with little effort thereby increasing my book's visibility.
Right now as I await my book's acceptance in the Premium Catalog (and I am confident I will be accepted) I am happy to announce I have as many as 300 plus downloads within the first two days of publishing. For that I have to thank Smashwords for the 'free' offer option that is sure to boost my book's rating.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I started writing when I was ten or perhaps twelve. I used to write short stories at the time. The first great review I received was for a short story I wrote in my college days and it is that appreciation that goaded me on towards writing longer books.
So I guess you can say one of the joy's of writing for me is an honest review from a valuable reader.
However the greatest joy for me is creating an entire imaginary world with characters that I can mold as per my wish. It makes me feel proud that I can offer my stories as gifts to so many readers out there who enjoy a good read.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. I also believe that the relationship between a writer and a reader is that of give and take. A writer gives the reader a story and the reader rewards the writer by appreciating it. This bond is so strong that sometimes I can almost feel I can reach out and personally thank the readers.
What are you working on next?
My next novel is once again a romance and this time it's set deep in the forests of Africa. A damsel in distress and a solider to the rescue; sigh...can anything be more romantic? Do catch up on 'Wild at heart' that should be released sometime in May 2015.
Who are your favorite authors?
F.Scott Fitzgerald for the wonderful, wonderful book; 'The Great Gatsby' (my all time favorite!), Dan Brown and Dean Knootz.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm a voracious reader and simply love spending my free time reading for myself (if I'm alone) or reading to my kids (if they are around)
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I follow the categories listed. It's simple enough.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yep and it's out there right now! That's 'Heart Matters'!
What is your writing process?
I hold a full time job and writing is simply my passion. So I usually write in the evenings when I have some time to myself. Process wise it's simple enough; once a story begins to form in my mind, I usually think of character names first, it sort of helps me to bring them to life, then I chalk the storyline in brief and follow it from there. Of course there are several changes by the time I finally arrive at my destination which 'The End'.
How do you approach cover design?
My focus is always on the characters since my genre is Romance. I concentrate on the personalities of both my hero and heroine and give a rough visualization to the artist. For example, the cover of 'Heart Matters' shows a shy gorgeous brunette and a handsome man in a suit with honey blond hair. They almost exactly represent the look I wanted for the hero and heroine I had imagined. The backdrop has an ocean and a coconut tree highlighting the part where one of the most important scenes in the book takes place.
What do you read for pleasure?
Mostly regency romances. I enjoy the way the skilled writers recreate eras that have long passed us by. I respect and admire their efforts and I especially feel a sense of despair as I have no skill whatsoever in writing a period romance. It requires detailed research and patience. So thumbs up for Regency writers.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
IPAD mini, comfortable to hold, sensitive to the eyes.
