Interview with Terrill Sarter, Jr

Published 2014-07-13.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I've always been a avid reader. After reading a book I would often dream about what I would do if I was the character in that book. From that it was such a short step to make me that character. Then it was a huge step to make what I wrote more then just a little personal gratification :P THAT was the hard part.

I love to read, as I wrote I found I loved to write too.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Finding a new way to answer a question. I like to bring a different perspective to a concept.

They say that most books cover the same theme's, that it is now impossible to write something truly unique. So far I can't disagree, so I write to bring a unique perspective to all the old questions.

Boy meets girl (same old same old right?) Girl kills boy, then makes a time machine to travel up and down the timeline looking for his reincarnated self so she can love him (or just kill him again, I mean really, he WAS playing around on her).

Tell me you've read a story like that! You can't >< I've just made it up.
What do your fans mean to you?
Connection and validation.

I am connected to my fans so I know my words "reached" someone. It gives me independent verification that I'm a good writer (shh don't yell at the screen I can't hear it)

and validation that my ideas are more then flights of fancy.
Who are your favorite authors?
To many to list, seriously, Heinlein, Anthony, White, Asimov, that dirty little hobo under the overpass.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Hunger, my parents got me addicted to food as a baby, and now if I don't eat I'll die.

and maybe a little anime.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Curled up in as tight a little ball as I can, sobbing uncontrollably under my desk.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Shhh, some things are best left buried.

My first story was so bad that when I read it I was put in a coma for a week.

My cat 'socks' never did wake up :(
What is your writing process?
Pure creationism, seriously I start writing and let the words flow. I have no idea where the story is going or if it will be worthwhile when it gets there.

In my head I have fully developed characters that just interact with the events of the story as I imagine characters of that type would. I write it down and see where it takes me. Of course, when I see that it has all turned to...cow patties? That generally means I've written between 10 and 15 thousand words that I get to just delete.

Some day I may break down and outline a story. Get it all in order and such, and on that day I expect I'll see a purple elephant fly by offering up free trips to the inner colonies.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The hobbit!

It gave me such dreams, I would read all day, and when I fell asleep at night I had the best dreams ever.

Without a doubt it started me down this road and transformed my life from something dreary to something not. I am forever in Tolkien's debt.
How do you approach cover design?
With the biggest boobies I can find.

Am I allowed to say that? Wait, what? How can lawsuits be pouring in already?? I've not even published my answer yet!

In all seriousness, I generally have a idea for the cover, I believe in that old adage "A picture is worth a thousand words" so I want my cover to tell you a thousand words of my book in a glance.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
hohoho,

You almost got me there, you guys.
