Interview with Darren Sheriff

Published 2018-01-31.
When did you first start writing?
I actually started back in 2014. The book "How To Grow Citrus Practically Anywhere" was going to be my first book, but then my work situation changed and it got hard to find time to write. Then, when it changed again, I had a chance to toy around and write Gardening Zone 8, the first three months. that was more of a dry run for future books.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have been writing a blog for 8 or 9 years now and wanted to try and get the information that I am teaching out to a broader audience. It just seemed like a logical step.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
We are still in the early stages of our relationship.
I have learned a lot about publishing and how to format books and articles, for that I am grateful.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Knowing that, or at least hoping that I am teaching somebody some valuable information.
There are many, many websites on the internet that pertain to gardening and horticulture. I try to put all the information somebody needs in one post so they do not have to search around for clarification.
What do your fans mean to you?
I truly appreciate each and every one of them. I get Thank You's, good job comments, and keep up the good work comments fairly frequently. When somebody stops and takes the time to send something like that, it really does make you feel good!
What are you working on next?
There are so many irons in the fire, I am not even sure which one will be the next introduction.
I have a family printables book about citrus in the works, a gardening book aimed at Millenials, A container camellia book, as well as a few other things. You will hear and see a LOT from me in the near future.
Who are your favorite authors?
I wish I had more time to read!
Between lecturing, writing, working, family, etc, there is just not enough time in the day.
I really don't have a favorite author, I love Sci-Fi Stories and Horror.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The promise of a new day!
I know that sounds really cheesy and cliche, but there is always a day to make up for what went wrong the previous day.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Working at my job as a manager of a garden center, working on my plants, lecturing, competing in flower shows, spending time with my wife....I guess I do sleep occasionally.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
My very first blog was about the cold temperatures that we had and what it was and what it was doing to the citrus trees here in Charleston. If I had ever written anything major before that, I either can't remember it or it was useless anyway.
What is your writing process?
I usually just start writing when the notion hits me.
Depending on what else is going on in my life, what kind of time I have, I will either write for as long as I can then edit it later. Or if I am really in a groove, I will write until done.
What do you read for pleasure?
On the very rare case that I can sit down and read, Sci-Fi and Horror are my favorites.
I actually enjoy reading textbooks on gardening and horticulture too!
Describe your desk
Which one? LOL
My desk at work is a cluttered mess, but yet, I know where everything is.
My desk at home is......okay, they are both a disaster, but I still know where everything is that I need.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in New Jersey, the Garden State.
My mother had the most beautiful garden and I would help her with it every year.
When I was old enough to have my own, I really enjoyed playing in it.
I guess being around nature and gardening my entire life is why I am so much into horticulture now.
I really should have seen it coming instead of trying to be a musician, which is definitely a story for another day.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest, already published book "How To Grow Citrus Practically Anywhere" came to light because I grow all of my citrus trees in containers. People, when they found out, wanted to know if they could too. Then I also would get the, I live in ???? and it is too cold to grow citrus there, I wish I could. So, combining both of those equations, out came the book.
My newest, or one of them I should say, will be basically the same style, except Camellias will be the crop.

Never a day goes by that I meet somebody that is definitely NOT from around here. They come into the nursery and either does not recognize a single plant or are just so overwhelmed by what they do see, they have no idea where to start. It really is fun to watch their eyes when I tell them that, yes, you can grow Citrus here, no Peonies do not, and Hostas will survive, but not necessarily thrive.
