Interview with The Countryman

What's the story behind your latest book?
I have been interested in wine making ever since I was a child, turning 'water into wine' was a fascinating process. During my first working years I was employed by Ruddles Brewary in Rutland, working as a Wine salesman, I gained a lot of knowledge about wines and a little knowledge about salesmanship.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
When I was at the tender age of fourteen years I thought about what I would like to do and how I would like to live my life, I had this romantic vision of becoming an author, living on a Narrow Boat, traveling throughout the countries cannel systems. Sixty eight years later I have got around to writing my first book, I will probably have to wait another sixty eight years before I can afford the Narrow Boat!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I can't believe how easy it was to publish on Smashwords. I did not imagine that such a Company existed, as far as I can see, they have thought of everything a budding author could wish for, to think that anyone who produces a worthwhile book now has the opportunity to get worldwide distribution, literally for free is nothing short of amazing. In a word - fantastic
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
In the back of my mind, I always wanted to write, my children - now grown up with married children of their own, have constantly encouraged me to write. One of my passions is making Home Made Wine, so I thought I would pass the knowledge that has been handed down through the generations of my family, for others to enjoy.
What do your fans mean to you?
I have not got any 'fans' yet, but I would be delighted to hear from those people who have purchased my book.
If there is any way in which I can help them enjoy this wonderful hobby, just contact me through my web site.
What are you working on next?
When. I retired I became bored within a matter of a few weeks. I needed something to occupy my mind, give me something constructive to do. I needed something that was not too demanding, only working when I wanted to and within a happy environment. A tall order one would imagine - but I found exactly that.
I do balloon decoration for Weddings, I just love it. It has brought out in me an artistic streak that I didn't even know I had.
I have been doing this for quite a few years now, have built up a great reputation and more work than I need. At the age of 82 I have decided to slow down, again a demand from my children. So, I have decided to pass on the know how, all the little things I have learned, how to create beautiful balloon displays, where and how to obtain the clients and where to purchase all the balloons and equipment that is required. This is my next project, to publish all the information any one needs if they are looking for an extra income that will give them great satisfaction and a worthwhile occupation.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I live in a little bungalow overlooking the beautiful Welland valley in Rutland county in the heart of rural England.
No matter what the season, the view into the valley is always worth getting up to see. I have a full rich life, always so much to do that I really do not have time, nor the inclination to stay in bed. I enjoy my life.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am lucky to live in a very friendly village and take an active interest in the social activities.
