Interview with J.A.J. Hutchisson

Published 2014-07-28.
What do you read for pleasure?
Both of us tend to lean more towards sci-fi and fantasy. We just love being pulled into another world where all sorts of things can happen.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
That's easy! It is either our computer or our nook! Both of which are fantastic options.
Describe your desk
Our desk is our laptop. It has everything we could possibly need on it! We tried a conventional desk setup once and didn't really enjoy it, we prefer the comfort of our couch over a desk chair.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
J.A.J Hutchisson: I grew up in Idaho, in a very small town, which gave way for my imagination to be a main form of entertainment.

J.L. Hutchisson: I grew up in Wyoming, in one of two larger towns of about 50,000. With the horrible wind and hot summers, it led to a lot of indoor time and thus my writing began once I realized I needed to write down my ideas.
When did you first start writing?
J.A.J. Hutchisson: I started writing at the age of 12 where I started turning playtime with Legos and G.I. Joe's into stories.

J.L Hutchisson: I started writing in the second grade around the age of 7. I have always had this overactive imagination, which often led to nightmares or awesome dreams. I wanted to turn all of those into stories.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Having more control over publishing rights was the main motivation. To us, this meant being in control of cover design, managing how the book was marketed, and the story itself.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
J.A.J. Hutchisson: The greatest joy for me is the process of creation. From making the world, to making characters to populate it, and seeing both the world and the characters take a life of their own. Unexpected things often happen.

J.L. Hutchisson: For me, it is definitely the creation process. I have always loved to create stories, imaginary people and places. Writing gives me the opportunity to share all of my creations.
What do your fans mean to you?
EVERYTHING. They are the ones who keep us going, the ones who demand sequels, the ones who say "when is your next book coming out?", or "will you sign a copy of your book?" They are the reason we try to make the next book, better than the last.
Who are your favorite authors?
J.A.J. Hutchisson: Robert Jordon, David Eddings, William C. Dietz, Michael Crichton, R.A. Salvatore, and Arthur C Clark

J.L. Hutchisson: Anne McCaffrey, Marion Zimmer Bradley, David Eddings, Janet Evanovich, Andy McDermott, and J.K. Rowling
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
J.A.J. Hutchisson and J.L. Hutchisson: Definitely the cats! They're always demanding our attention, especially in the morning when they want fed and watered. After that, the day goes as it goes.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
J.A.J. Hutchisson and J.L. Hutchisson: Playing two player video games, watching movies, reading, and of course, the dreaded housework!
