Interview with V. L. Dillon

What do your fans mean to you?
The fans are everything. Without them I am nothing. The reason I write is for them, to entertain them and give them something to enjoy. A way for my fans to escape the pains and stress of everyday life. To escape their lives and be someone else and be somewhere else. It's all for wonderful, loving fans. I love them and thank them.
What is your writing process?
I come up with a mental outline. Then, I dig up characters for a few days: Names, individual characteristics and then what part they play in the story. That is when the story starts taking shape. Then if there are any conflicts in characters, I embed that into the conflicts of the story. All characters help each other to evolve and or go somewhere - such as the twist in most of my stories. The rest pretty much falls together.
How do you approach cover design?
The cover design is done three different possible ways. I know what the story is that is percolating in my mind and I put something together from the meat of the story, or one of my friends will kindly do a cover for me from the description I give them and they allow me to suggest little changes here and there. All covers are either done before I start writing, or the covers are done before I am 1/3 into the story. I like to look at the covers as I write so I remember where I am going with it and it stops me from getting writers block.
Describe your desk
Ahhhh, my desk.....A computer tower, monitor, speakers, headphones. Seven pieces of post-it notes where I have jotted down points or ideas to weave into my stories. A bottle of mouthwash and a glass of Kool-Aid. It is not actually a desk, I would call it more of a table that goes behind a couch for lamps, vases and the such. It serves its purpose and doesn't take up much room. It really presents no imagination station. It is boring!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Missouri, in the country. A young mind and a lot of room for imagination to grow and play. We were surrounded by farms with corn fields and our subdivision was in the middle of nowhere, there were creeks and trees with vines. Acres and acres of open lands to run through. There was one large Catholic church up the road and a huge water tower in the middle of the subdivision. I have always wondered how many kids didn't brave climbing up those ladder rungs. That tower was so big it was scary. We called it the tower of nightmares, because kids were always talking about the nightmares they had of it pulling its legs up and walking around like a huge silver spider, which kids are scared of. I grew up in a great place for the imagination.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy is when people write to me and tell me something tickled them or something scared the holy hollyhocks out of them. That's when I know I have done what I had set out to do.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love photography and grab the chance when I can. So, If I am not at my desk, I am outside looking for animals, flowers or other interesting things. A lot of times there are things I see when I am taking pictures that I can add into my stories. I sometimes use them as covers also.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Everything I can find on the internet. There are Twitter, Facebook as the biggest marketing tools, there are several others, but a good one most people do not think about is: on your smartphone. You can go into your smartphone and you can do a personal signature that goes out with every E-Mail. You can word it however you like. Mine is simple and says my writers name and where they can check out my e-books. You have to be creative to get the news out there.
What are you working on next?
My next eBook is going to be fun. It is called The Dysfunctional Detective. The premise of the book is: There are hundreds of thousands of people out there who have questions about their childhoods and their life in general and they come from dysfunctional backgrounds. So, this will be an adventure to follow a dysfunctional detective try and figure out, who, what, where, when, why? I am having a bit of help from one of my sisters. We have been on a dysfunctional journey most of our lives. We are not what would be considered dysfunctional, but the family we come from is definitely. We have watched everything take place from different ages and perspectives and have been putting pieces together and getting a broader understanding of how severely dysfunctional our family was, and how we are lucky not to have been sucked in by it.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I love to make my own choice and that is what you get being an Indie author. I can do it on my own and down the road, if I want, I could get an agent and publisher, doubtful, but if I want. I would feel too crowded with everyone telling me what I can and cannot do.
