Interview with Julius Thie

What is your writing process?
I mostly get a vague idea. I think about it for a long time and a story starts materializing. I write the first paragraph and I start having a distant image of how the end will be. The rest just sprouts out as I continue writing.
Who are your favorite authors?
I like Danielle Steel and Heather Graham, all African writers especially Ngugi Wa Thiong'o, Chinua Achebe and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I watch a movie, read a book, or I am off laughing at the top of my voice among family and friend. Mostly family.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Having left my work at some point the previous night, I sleep thinking about how I will complete it the following day. That is enough to make me kick the blanket come morning. For me work never ends, it is a continuation, an elongation.
How do you approach cover design?
For the covers, I just depict one aspect of the story, just one, and I make it appear fully on the cover.
What do you read for pleasure?
I love fantasy with all my heart. It makes one's imagination explode. I also read poems and African Short stories.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My phone.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing when I was in high school. But I wasn't putting much stress to it.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the bushy and hilly areas of Central Kenya. Our culture has a lot of story telling. When our grandmother told us stories, I imagined myself as the main characters, or even better; the character creator. I would ask myself, "I f I was the storyteller here, how scary would I make my character, or how strong, or how weak?"
