Interview with T.J. Christian
Published 2016-02-25.
When did you first start writing?
I began writing in Junior High School back in the mid-80s. I was (and still am) a ravenous reader and I finally got to the point that I felt like I could write too. In fact, I had to write. The more I read, the more stories of my own began to materialize in my head. It got to the point that I just had to write them down and get them out.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Telling an interesting and compelling story. I love to create and build an imaginative world to share with everyone.
Who are your favorite authors?
In no particular order: Robert McCammon, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Lee Child, Christopher Moore, Laurell K. Hamilton, Piers Anthony, Frank Herbert, Kevin J. Anderson, and Orson Scott Card.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I don't remember the first story, but I do remember the one that I really liked the most (as far as those early stories are concerned). It was a story about a teenager that had just received his first car. The problem was, he liked to run over small animals with it. Then one night, he ran over a raccoon on the way home and the raccoon came back to haunt him. Cheesy--yes, but I really liked it.
What is your writing process?
I'm really a pantser and usually follow my characters. I have a list of things that I want to see happen (and usually an ending), but they are never set in stone. Sometimes, the best story is the one that veers away from my intended path.
