Interview with Thomas Kennedy

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Dublin Ireland, born in 1945. These were hard times with religion, poverty and mendacity. Hard times can be good times. As values are simple. And as the Beatles said, love is all you need.
It was necessary to become oneself in part by rising above and climbing out of the way things were done around the then value system
When did you first start writing?
I started story telling when my kids were young and I was trying to settle them down to sleep. I started writing fiction in my forties but didn't produce anything worth publishing until my fifties.
My father came from a remote Irish speaking part of Ireland. In those parts there was an oral tradition of story telling and maybe I picked up some if this.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is part of a series. I write drawing on Irish mythology and put the characters into a modern environment. Druids, Leprechauns and witches in modern San Francisco. The book is called The San Francisco Leprechauns. I hope it combines humor with excitement. Characters that appeared in my previous book - The Chicago Druid and the ugly Princess - pop up in this story so yhere is continuity but not exactly a series.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Inability to engage traditional publishers who were unsure that my writing could attract a mass market. Now I love it as it cuts out the hassle and lets me concentrate on writing. I'm awful at marketing so I just put my books out there and hope they'll be found.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It's an author friendly site run with enthusiasm. It provides wide distribution as my books are in the premium category. Their regular promotions make it possible to offer my books for free and reach the wider audience.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I donno.
It's a freedom. It's expressing myself. I live it.
The moment when the novel is published is great.
Smashwords make it possible to track sales and hits on the site. This is fun.
I love the thought that someone has read my work.
What do your fans mean to you?
I don't know if I have any. I've got a few great reviews so maybe I have. I hope I entertain them and make them think about the world we live in. Fans give me a sense of community and reaching out from my small corner of the world into other lives. I hope they are taken out of their world for the time they read my work and they smile as they enjoy.
What are you working on next?
My next novel is called - The Boston Druid and the Wizard. my old villain Druid Lochlain and his cat Venus lock horns with the Faerie Queen. Her champion is a teenager who finds himself in a complicated situation especially when a monster called an engapmahc causes havoc.
It's nearly there. Hopefully it combines fun and adventure.
Who are your favorite authors?
I read a wide selection. Currently I am reading ' Gone Girl' by G Flynn. I love Tolkien - the lord of the rings. I read Camus in french am I am trying to learn the language. An Irish writer called Benjamin Black who writes literature as John Banville. I recently read The boy with the striped pyjamas. Fantasy books like Artemis Fowl by eoin golfer and a dance with dragons by G Martin.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Life, living, being here. We get "one moment in anilhilation's waste" so go for it.
Family, love, friends and people. And writing the next page.
Take control and run your life. Then you'll get up in a positive frame of mind.
Find love. Realise yourself. Don't let the begrudgers get you down. Find positive energy and friends with positive energy.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Family first.
I play tennis and golf.
Friends. cinema. reading. Doing nothing and enjoying it.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I have kindle but lately I use my Samsung phone for everything including books. I look at the best sellers lists, browse bookshops, talk to friends. And I browse amazon smashwords and barnes and noble
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes it became the first chapter of my book 'Dark Drink and Conversation
I wrote it for a creative writing course I was on.
What is your writing process?
I draft by hand using pen and paper and rewrite into the computer.
Then I rewrite and redraft as I go.
when the novel is finished I get a print version and give it to my sister to proof read. Several proofs later I decide it's done. Then I get it through the smashwords process to be in the premium category.
