Interview with Carolyn Straub

When did you first start writing?
I wrote during grade school and won a few recognitions.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It is a fiction account of my days beginning in newspapers.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Traditional book publishers seem to have a tight hold on what they will accept to publish.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords opened the door to independently creating and publishing e-books.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The release of creative powers
What do your fans mean to you?
It is good to have fans. There seem to be too many critics.
What are you working on next?
I am an activist and pen many letters.
Who are your favorite authors?
This varies. I know better what I don't like; a horror story for instance.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Being alive
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
We spend our time birding, traveling, and working with our house. We are also involved in community endeavors.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I discover e-books by way of friends who also publish e-books..
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
No, but I contemplated white spaces of paper to see what I might create on them, beginning in grade school.
What is your writing process?
Diving right in and beginning. This is probably from years of newspaper journalism and its demands.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Probably the "Dick and Jane" readers in the first grade in the 1950s. I was happy when I learned to read "one," my first word.
How do you approach cover design?
With an appropriate idea
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I don't have five favorites books. I have many.
What do you read for pleasure?
Stories about real life and relationship. I was a journalist for many years.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Ultimately letting the book speak for itself on Smashwords. There have been readers.
Describe your desk
My desk is cleared of all that is unrelated for each project I do.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in western New York state when it was rural, and was usually wanting to go to the library and get books
