Interview with Tomer Lanis

When did you first start writing?
After coming back from a six-month sailing sabbatical, many of my friends and colleagues listened to my stories and said: "Tomer, you have to write it!"
So in April 2014 I decided to give it a go, sat down and started writing a book for the first time in my life.
What's the story behind your latest book?
So many people dream of it; so few end up taking it: an extended Sabbatical.
I, too, was confronted with all the paralyzing reasons not to go: jobs, kids at school, a mortgaged house, two cats, no time and no budget. Nevertheless, I decided with my wife to put our jobs on hold, pull our two kids out of school and go sailing together around the Caribbean for six months. After coming back, we made two eye-opening discoveries: first, we benefit individually and collectively as a family far beyond our wildest dreams. Second, we are not lucky or unique; anybody can do it.
In this book I demonstrate how anybody can - and why everybody should - take an extended sabbatical.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing for me isn't joy, it's hard work. But knowing that others will be inspired, fulfill their dreams and enhance their lives because of my story is a huge privilege.
How do you approach cover design?
Graphic design is a profession. I leave it for the professionals. I don't think that an amateur can reach quickly the same result as someone who studied, practiced and developed expertise over many years.
