Interview with Towanda Mckie

Describe your desk
My desk is the size of a small kitchen table. It has a table fan, radio, and a lamp so that I can work at night and not disturb my husband's sleep. I also have a small basket with pens, pencils, tape, sticky notes, colorful stick pens, paper clips, etc. My desk looks like one that you would find in an office. Most of the time everything stays organized but when I get into a midnight writing session it's a different story. I also have a scented candle that I burn when I feel overwhelmed. The scent helps to relax me.
When did you first start writing?
I have always loved writing. As a child and teenager I wrote short stories but never kept them. I wrote in journals and scribbled whenever I had a chance. I am now beginning to publish some of my work.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Addy Goes to Grandma's House came from a journal that my daughter and I wrote in after she returned from a visit with my mom. She told me things that I never imagined my mother saying or doing and I thought that I'd better keep notes. One day, Kayla said that we should take the notes and write a book about Grandma. My response was simply, "Okay".
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My motivation is probably similar to most indie authors; it's a challenge to get a major publisher to pick up new authors.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing is looking at the finished product. All of what was inside of me is now on those pages.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans are everything. Without them my writing stays in a small box. I wasn't built for a small box.
What are you working on next?
The next book is not a children's book. I am working on a solo project. This book will be a fiction chapter book about a rebellious teenager. It is the "Good" parents struggle to get their son to want the life that they want to give him.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I am not writing I love to watch good movies. These movies don't have to be in a specific genre but they should be well written and executed.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I discover ebooks by word of mouth. I hear about books from my daughter, her friends, and their parents.
What do you read for pleasure?
I like to read books about family relationships. I love reading about the problem and the solution.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I don't have a preference. I have read ebooks on many of them.
