Interview with Traci Tucker

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I remember what I *think* was my first story. We were studying mythology in sixth grade and had to write our own myth. I wrote a story about a giant who was a shoemaker, and how an accident he had created the Mississippi River! I think I still have that paper around here somewhere...
What do you read for pleasure?
When I really just want to be in the moment, I spend time with my son or with our dog. They really keep me grounded and present. When I want to be more meditative, I crochet. I love the productivity of it, while the activity is very relaxing while letting my mind wander.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Believe it or not, my phone! Yes, it's small, but I always have it with me, so I don't have to remember to bring a book or a tablet or another device with me. These days, it's the best way for me to be able to keep reading.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The Salt and the Salve was a long time coming. A long time. Not because it was difficult, but because there was a lot of stopping and starting due to other things going on in my life. The last thing I wanted to do once it was finally ready was wait another year or two or ten for an agent to agree to represent me, and then for a publishing house to accept the book. I was too impatient at that point and wanted to be in control of what happened next. Maybe that was what it was all about - me staying in control! Haha.
What are you working on next?
I have a few things in the works now. I have another women's fiction book percolating. And, my son and I have an idea for a children's book that features Bella, our dog. And—Sh! Don't tell anyone!—I have started working on an erotic novel! I have no idea which one of these will get done first! We'll see!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Well, most of the time I am not writing! I have a full life and am very grateful for that, for each and every day. I work with the agency, which I love doing. My son is home with me half the time, so we're talking homework, studying, basketball, Bella, what's for dinner, etc. He is my greatest joy! When he isn't home, Bella and I hang out and watch baseball! Haha. I usually have a myriad of projects that I am working on in addition to writing. I love to crochet, so when I'm watching baseball or another favorite show on tv, I'm usually crocheting. Occasionally I sew. And I read. Or I am reorganizing something in my house! Haha!
