Interview with Tristan Dent

What motivated you to become an indie author?
I am a big fan of movies and I have always loved story telling. I'm especially a fan of science fiction and horror movies and books and felt like I had stories of my own to tell.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smash words has given me the chance to publish and sell my work that I might have never had through traditional publishing. The site makes it so easy for authors to reach a large audience.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The creative process is the true joy for me. Creating stories and characters from a blank page is so challenging but enjoyable at the same time. Having total control in that process is also very enjoyable. You can take the story and characters wherever you want when you are writing.
What do your fans mean to you?
I don't have many fans at this time, but if I did I'd certainly want to write compelling stories and create interesting characters for them. I think that fans would have a lot of great ideas for stories and I'd love to meet them and talk to them about writing.
What are you working on next?
I am working on a book now that is not yet titled. It's a book about war, time travel, and love.
Who are your favorite authors?
Stephen King, Charles Dickens
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Writing, music, and my dog inspire me to get out of bed each day. Also, my love of nature inspires me. There is nothing like seeing a beautiful sunset or majestic mountains in the fall!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend a lot of time on music. I play bass guitar and electric lead guitar and love all kinds of music styles.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I pursue many different websites but many times I read books recommended to me by friends.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I'm sure I wrote stories as a young man in grade school but I don't remember them. I did take creative writing in college where I wrote many short stories. One was about a trip I took to Paris as a young lad in the military.
What is your writing process?
I follow a similar process for each book I write. I always create an outline of the story before writing. This helps me stay on track especially when writing since I may lose track of where I am and where I'm going. I also create a character list for all my books which helps in character development and use in the plot.
