Interview with Tyler Majaga

Who are your favorite authors?
I think for me Danielle Steel will always be that one writer I look up to. Then there is one of Africa's greatest authors, the late Chinua Achebe, amongst others.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The zeal to continue making greatness through whatever it is I plan to do that day.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Watching my favorite series on TV or playing some "Age of Empires". It depends on my mood but most of the time, I am listening to music or just sitting there thinking about what to write next.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, definitely! I think it was back in primary school when I wrote a little comic book about some king who wanted to save the world or something. I was a huge fan of Troy and Gladiators at the time.
Describe yourself in three words
Passionate about writing. That should do it
How do you approach cover design?
For me, anything that I look at and go, "Wow!" works for me. I am an animation guy so mostly animated covers kill it for me.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I have a couple of them but "Animal Farm" and "The Great Gatsby" did it for me.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read mostly magazines. FHM, Men's Health, People and Cosmopolitan are usually my kind of reads.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Currently, it is my BlackBerry z10
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Social media has done a great job so far. Much thanks to Facebook at the most. Then radio and newspaper interviews too. Just being interactive with your readers, really.
Describe your desk
My laptop, a coffee mug, newspapers, a couple of scribbled papers and my cell phone!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in villages mostly. But this only made me curious about the urban lifestyle and I was never one to just sit on my ass and watch life pass me by. I was a curious little boy and read a lot due to the peace villages provide. I think with time, my curiosity lead me to Hollywood productions, which are one of my biggest influences in crafting my stories.
When did you first start writing?
I was just 14 when I really sat down and started writing on a professional capacity.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My teen years experiences were too awesome to let be forgotten. So in short, my latest work is a tale inspired by all I did with those around me when I was in my teen years.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Being able to look at someone read my work and just appreciate it does it for me.
What do your fans mean to you?
They mean the world! Literally. Without them, who am I really?
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Not really, hey. But I do remember reading a book by some Zimbabwean author about child soldiers. It really touched me and from that day since, I have had a different opinion on child soldiers and war all together.
Any last words, Mr Majaga?
Buy my book and I promise you, you will not regret it. Not at all!
