Interview with Ursula Ross

When did you first start writing?
I started writing poetry as a way of expressing my innermost feelings at the age of twelve.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing for me is when I can take a life experience and create poetry from it to touch every soul that has an ear to hear.
Who are your favorite authors?
My two favorite authors and poets are Maya Angelou and Langston Hughes.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
There is nothing that inspire me more to get out of bed than when I take that first breath in the morning, thank God for waking me up and knowing that I have my children and grandson depending on me to be the best that I can be.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I am not writing, I spend a lot of my time reading, dancing, and traveling, but what I love most, is spending time with my entire family and friends.
What is your writing process?
My writing process usually start with me wanting to expel what is in my mind and weighing heavy on my heart. It also start with me wanting to give someone advice or the desire to help them through something they are going through. As words formulate in my head they become a song that I begin to sing out loud. As I began writing, the song becomes the tempo in which I deliver the poem.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
To be quite honest, it wasn't a story that had the greatest impact on me, it was Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes and Dr Seuss's books. I can remember as early as six years old reading all of those books and falling in love with telling a story by rhyming. It impacted my life in such a way that I found an outlet to express my feelings by putting them into poetry.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read a lot of religious, romance, and self help books.
How do you approach cover design?
When I am working on a cover design I have to feel that it reflects what is within its pages.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My e-reading device of choice is my home PC and when I am away from home I use my Android Phone.

As you take this journey through my life, through your life, your families and friends’ life, and even through that strangers life—for this is everyday people's poetry, I pray it soothes your hurts, give you a clearer understanding, and instill in you a compassion for what you don't understand. More than anything, I pray that the words of my poetry becomes a voice for those who do not have one.
